Hi to all those who are or did attend Hamilton I have a question regarding the dorm policies of string lights and flags and tapestries- I know you can't have them unless they are fire rated but can anyone direct me to sites that sell such things or do they not exist? Also how strict are they on this policy! Thank you!!

Any string of lights, like Xmas lights, that is current sold should be okay. If they’re safe enough to put on a dead, dry tree, he should be safe enough for the dorm.

Here’s how the firechecks work: RAs come around in the fall and check your room. If there’s something wrong, they leave a note, and if you don’t remove the object by their schedule checkup, they’ll confiscate it and you may get points. But your RA tells you when they’re coming, so for that week, you just keep your lights down.

The bigger check is when the actual fire department comes and randomly checks rooms. Same policy, if you don’t fix the issue, they’ll come back and give you points. But once again, there’s a scheduled week or so for these random checks.

Other than those two times, no authority figure is coming into your room. Don’t have anything too flashy and you’ll be fine! One year the only way my roommate and I could both get power to our desks was by piggybacking a power strip onto another or using an extension cord (or completely rearranging our room, which we were never going to do). We got our piggybacked strips unplugged (apparently that was a fire hazard), but no one really hassled us about it.

String lights, flags, and tapestries are all prohibited by res life. Yes, there are ways around it. But, I would encourage you to leave these items at home. Don’t make your RAs life more difficult than it has to be =)
