I have a question for any current Duke students. What kind of wall hanging appliances are you able to use? Can we staple posters to the wall or even use small nails, or is all that is allowed sticky tack and the like? What are the rules on that? What are the restrictions on little Christmas-tree-style lights, as well? Thanks!

Ummm . . . I think they encourage you to use stuff that won't damage the walls . . . but it's not like your RA is busting into your room everyday to make sure you're not using a nail or something. Though if there is extensive damage to the walls that wasn't there when you move in, you might get charged but I haven't really heard of that happening very often. I don't think you really need to worry about it or anything.

It also depends on what dorm you're in. Hanging up heavy stuff in Randolph and Blackwell can be hard because not much sticks to the walls. They'll probably give you some sticky thingies on move-in day. KEEP THEM or at least remember which brand they were...I swear they're the only thing that work.

A lot of people hang lights in their rooms, so I don't think you'll have to worry about that.

sticky tack is pretty useless from my experience. I just use any scotch mounting tape, but make sure it doesn't damage walls!! (because mine has!!). There's a kind with a pull-off tab that works great.

Christmas lights are awesome...my roommate and i slash tons of other people have them everywhere.

they give u like three package worth of sticky things on the first day, they work well for some but not for others...

blue sticky tack stains walls.
you can nail stuff in the walls. once you move to west you realize what you can get away with, so people have more elaborate set ups. i have nails in my walls, and i can like conceal the holes with toothpaste when i move out.

velcro is really good for big posters. it works like a charm and i swear by it. also-- my friend has this crazy mirror hanging on her wall (not one of those cheap long mirrors, but this legitimately heavy fancy one) that is hanging up because of hot glue! there's a bunch of good types of sticky thing-- my personal preference is made by the scotch tape company and it's simply called poster tape. it's heavy duty double stick tape and amazing.

but yeah-- you can nail in picture frames and stuff, paint the walls (paint them back to white-- that's a definite HUGE charge if you don't), hang up christmas lights and those paper lanterns over your bed, etc. as long as you don't seriously damage your room, you're set.

thank you so much! heart
