I just got a personal email from an admissions officer at a top 20 liberal arts college praising my essay and asking me some questions about it. Is this a significant indicator of interest on the college's part, or does it mean less than I think it does?

Which college?

I'd rather not say.. but its in the bottom half of the top twenty.

I think if they aren't interested in you... they probably wont email you...

Just try answer as well as you can... and restate your interest in their school.. I think you are on the shortlist...now just push yourself over the edge with your answers

Do you really think that a busy adcom would take the time to e-mail an applicant praising their essay and asking some questions unless the adcom was seriously considering you for admission?

It doesn't mean that you're definitely in, but it certainly sounds like the college is seriously considering you.

Thanks... I didn't expect someone to answer so quickly. I'll definitely restate my interest, as you said. Off to type the email now. (And I thought the days of caring about my application essay were over...)

Also provide an update about any honors/achievements since you applied. And make sure to spellcheck and read over your e-mail for grammatical errors. Not the time to make a glaring mistake.
