I am pretty surprised that I received this invitation yesterday as my credentials are not extremely strong relative to other UCLA engineering applicants (also because I was rejected from SLO for ME). Hopefully everyone is correct in saying that this is pretty much a guaranteed acceptance because UCLA is my top-choice. I also received an invitation for a UCSB reception honoring top applicants (applied for chemical engineering at UCSB).

When I read “highly competitive and I invite you and your parents…” I was thinking this might be a likely letter.

But when I read the last line… “I look forward to seeing you in person on April 14th” I was sold on it being a likely letter. As a marketing copywriter it is fun to unravel how well and clever this is crafted.

If ya get rejected after receiving this, well then, that’s pretty cold.

I’m from California but I moved overseas to singapore, so American living abroad here:) applied to electrical engineering, received the letter yesterday !!

@Atypicalasian: My GPA was actually somewhat below average for LA (3.69 UW), but my ECs included USAMO, engineering internships at berkeley, some other science competitions, and of course volunteer club stuff. So, my guess is that these letters are handed out based on overall applicant quality, not just grades or SAT, or something.

@HubliDocks Hi! I’m also an international student but I haven’t received any letter from UCLA so far… I’m an Asian. Where are you from? and What’s your stat? Thanks a lot! :)

Has there been anyone from previous years who has received the LL, but has been rejected? (except for cases involving failing grades senior year, etc.)

No. I’ve pretty much scoured CC (and a lot of other sites) for all UCLA likely letter info. Nobody has ever received the letter and later been rejected for any reason other than failing to meet a-g eligibility or getting at D, etc. Looking at past statistics, LA engineering admits about 3,300 people. Of those 3,300, 700 - 750 of the most competitive are sent this letter. Also, for the past 2 or 3 years, engineering makes the final admit/reject decision, not the LA admissions board; therefore, there’s really no way you can get this letter and somehow be rejected.

I see. So essentially, if we do get the letter, it can be implied that we have been accepted? That’s pretty cool, because I applied to UCLA not expecting to get ANYTHING from it :D

Argh… I applied to School of Engineering in UCLA (HSSEAS) and did not receive ‘likely letter’. Is there someone who got into UCLA Engineering but not receiving the letter? Gosh. I am trying to think the letter is not the only confirmation of decision, but I am really getting anxious!!!
