I’m THRILLED …

They seem to be trickling out, so don’t give up hope if you haven’t received one yet …

Not to say I’m expecting one… but are all of these mentioned for minorities? Or is it general likely letters?

I haven’t seen any general likely letters on this thread. So we can all keep hoping! :)

Got the Latino email, so excited :D. How important is it to make it to the weekend?

I got the likely letter! I didn’t even realize it was a likely letter until I came on here. Wow. I know it doesn’t guarantee anything though, so I’m trying NOT to get my hopes up

danceluvur, Duke doesn’t send out likelies that aren’t sincere. Obviously, everyone admitted to Duke is qualified in many categories for admission to several peer colleges…and there is some luck involved.
Barring your getting arrested or turning in a series of Cs and Ds on your final transcript in June, you will have the choice to move onto the very homey East Campus next fall with the class of 2014. And from your screen name…sounds like you will be contributing to Duke’s fine dance programming. Good luck as you make your final decisions and enjoy your “early write.” Hope you choose to be a Blue Devil.

Duke, like many peer institutions and small and larger colleges, does a a form of intentional minority recruitment but they will also release a couple hundred just plain old likely letters to a general pool of top sought after students of all backgrounds.

With a graduation rate as high as Duke’s, Duke is only admitting students that can handle the challenge.

Many of the recipients get multiple “likely letters” and they will not all choose Duke. Many equally qualified students will not get a likely letter from Duke, but may hear from other colleges…it is all a bit of a random process. Everyone gets access to a need blind admission process and to a no loan and very good financial need program.

I am hoping to get likely letter from Duke.

I’m fairly positive likely letters go out to non-minority candidates as well (abt 300). Based on what I’ve been able to deduce from past threads, students generally receive them around March 13th. So I would imagine some CCers will be getting them this or next week.

Holy crap!! I just check my email and got a BSAI invite. Mucho unexpected.

My stats Suck(but i think it was my essays):
SAT:1840 (1870 super-score)
GPA:3.97
Val
Alot of leadership
Submitted Art works for review
Amazing Interview

I just got it today. Well actually I got two haha. I’m a black hipanic( Puerto Rican and Dominican. Think Jose Reyes, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Carlos Delgado, etc.) and on the Common app i put i was both hispanic and black so I got invited to both the Latino and the black student weekends. I also got another email saying I could only pick one lol.

Stats:
SAT: 2030(1350)
SAT IIs: U.S. 720, Chem 650, Spanish 650
Rank: 12/400
3 sport varsity athlete(not recruited though)
Very personal and moving essay. Only let one of my friends read it and she cried afterwards.
Both of my parents were immigrants
1st Generation college student
Don’t have a lot of money lol. I qualified for a fee waiver for all of my apps.
APs- 5 Euro, 5 APUSH, 4 Eng Lang, 3 Eng lit, 3 Chem. Taking 5 more APs this year

Perhaps these letters aren’t necessarily “likely letters”. I recently received an email (and letter) about becoming a finalist for a (full-ride) scholarship to Duke. In the letter it explicitly states “Shortly, you will receive the official letter of acceptance from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions inviting you to join Duke University’s Class of 2014.” A week prior, I received a letter from Dartmouth that contained a similar statement. These minority emails just seem to hint at one’s chances for admissions and do not seem to guarantee it.

It is not a guarantee but it does say the following:

“Naturally, inviting you to campus means that we think you’re a very strong candidate for admission. Very occasionally, something happens or we receive new information between the time we mail our invitation and the time we finalize admissions decisions, and we find we can’t admit someone we’ve invited. But that’s very rare. Your chances of being
admitted are excellent.”

That’s why it’s called a “likely letter”, meaning the individual is very likely to get accepted, but they don’t guarantee anything.

Can someone provide proof that likelies are not only sent to minorities? I know someone said that likely letters are sent to non minorities but where is there proof of this?

^Do a google search, or even better, search through past threads in the Duke forum. Many people (including Asians!) have said they’ve gotten likely letters.

From what I’ve read so far, I’ve gathered that non URM students get likely letters too…but has anyone gotten that yet this year?

Please post if you have…I’m deperate to know

don’t be desperate…if you have the goods to hope for a likely letter…you will get into good colleges Duke or no Duke if you also applied to schools with better admission rates than Duke U.

Do a search from last March…and you will see the approximate date of the general like-lies. Yes, we have a white male friend who got a likely invite to Duke. He did not choose to attend Duke but he got a (rare) likely letter. He chose an Ivy. Please remember that many who get these letters are not coming to Duke and they probably get multiple invitations. Duke has a good yield rate but don’t freak out…many who are being recruited are not going to “take a seat.”

My son turned down colleges that gave him like-lies…and attended Duke…which did not send him any encouragement whatsoever.

You guys need to relax - those who apply to schools such as Duke have stellar stats and applications. And yet, only the TOP 200-300 of those already TOP applicants receive a likely letter. That’s < 0.8% of applicants, a much lower percentage than Duke’s overall admit rate.

Do not expect a letter such as this. If you get one, great. If you don’t get one, then whatever. Remember, you’re more than likely not to get one. Most of Duke’s admitted class DID NOT receive this letter.

On another note, just wait haha. Duke’s decision will be there in less than a month. I know this is a stressful time but thinking about it too much/often will only make things worse.

Good luck!
