Who does Duke send a likely letter to? The BEST applicants with unbelievable stats? Or just applicants who, Duke knows, will be accepted, even without stellar stats?

The likely letters are for the top ~2% of applicants, so last year it was about 360 people. I think they are for applicants with high academic stats and other factors such as legacy, and all of these people were invited to the pre-acceptance "Duke Up Close" program in early April.

I believe there was also a separate pre-acceptance diversity weekend a few days earlier, but I don't know if they got a different type of likely letter.

If you get a likely letter, it will probably come around (or before) March 1.

Like, what kind of stats would merit a likely letter? Would a 2300 SAT cut it?

Probably 1500+ SAT's (I still use the old scale) and close to a 4.0 GPA unweighted with challenging classes and a high rank. Not everyone with these stats will get one, however.

Most people who got likely letters were also accepted to Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, although I was not.

they should do unlikely letters. I just wanna get it over with.

So, you don't need to be a Westinghouse winner, or a bball recruit to get a likely letter, right?

If you get a likely letter, what's the chance you'd still be rejected>?

^ ha, that'd be cruel.

LOL unlikeley letters.

Dear Pongo

Every once in a while in the midst of reading hundreds of files, an admissions officer will be so bummed about a student's application that he or she will come to me to ask if we might save the student the agony of waiting for that rejection letter in April. I am writing to inform you that this has happened in your case, and that we are provisionally denying you admission to the Duke Class of 2010. Have a nice life.

Sincerely,
Christoph Guttentag

^ Lol!!!!!

Hilarious.

P.S. That essay makes an excellent liner for my bird cage. What sort of paper did you print it on?
