Okay, that's somewhat relieving, that URMs are the ones receiving thing.
Damn for being Caucasian.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the ones here in NYS that I know of were very much Caucasian. Got a letter AND a phone call from a student.

Which Cornell school ?
Wasn't it Human Ecology that called ppl ?

Well, congratulations to those who received the letters! For those who did not, keep the faith.

DD also got a likely letter today from Cornell. Part of the text reads as follows, "Your application to Cornell University has been reviewed by the admissions selection committeee, and I am writing to let you know that you are very likely to be admitted to Cornell. Although the Ivy League schools won't officially notify students of their admission decissions until later this month, we wanted to share this good news with you now."

Is your DD a URM? And which Cornell school did she apply to?

Letter and phone call was for student who applied to Human Ecology.

I'm from Virginia

What's the point of a likely letter, if the applicant can still get rejected?

/jealous :) (though I actually want to know the point of these letters)

if an applicant gets a likely theyre in.. the only way they would get rejected is if between the time they got the letter and march 29th the applicant starts failing all his/her classes or gets arrested

Good question, liana. I must say that I suspect that it is really about marketing - getting a leg up on the other schools that likely candidates applied to (e.g. Cornell really wants me and I am really special because I received a likely letter, while the other school(s) that I applied to did not send me one).

Okay, phew... The letter/phone call was for Human Ecology. That's what I had thought since kids on here were talking about getting phone calls from them.

So basically, it doesn't seem like any non-URMs who applied to CAS have gotten likely letters yet... Which is good, because I'm a non-URM who applied to CAS.
I don't really expect to get in, but I'd like to maintain some optimism.

Oh No! I'm part URM and didn't receive anything. Guess I haven't been accepted. There's nothing to do in Ithaca anyway.

lol You never know... Plus you're only part-URM.
dulce, you're so hostile, hehe.

Hm, did anybody ever figure out if the phone call from HE meant anything in the first place?

i got a likely letter today. im half urm.

anyone know if Engineering sends out likely letters?

I applied to HE, and got a phone call from a student like most people. I kinda half asked the girl who called if the phone calls meant anything, and she kinda vaguely responded that they were basically contacting everyone who applied to HE. I just want to know if anybody out there applied to HE and didn't get a phone call from a current Cornell Student?

decisions are in 2 weeks and they're still sending them? Wow. Any CoE likely letters?

mikey101: Yes, applied to HE. No phone call. No letter.
