and these are supposed to be ' a fraction of those offered admission '

lol... Seriously, we're at 11 pages and still running? That's a lot of likelies. (even considering that not every post is an announcement of having received a likely...)

it seems that amongst the likely letters, there are differences
for example, some people got
"Your application to Cornell University has been reviewed by the admissions selection committee, and I am writing to let you know that you are very likely to be admitted to Cornell. "
while others got
"I am writing to let you know how much the Cornell Engineering Admissions Committee enjoyed reading your application....you are very likely to be admitted to Cornell."

so are there different kinds of likelies too?
like, for some are likely likely, and others it's maybe likely?

and there's also the fact that some got it in letter form while others got it in email form, and that some are in the finals for awards such as JohnMcMullens while others are not.

the letters are different because they came from different schools. Some got emails because they are internationals and letters wouldn't be there till March 29 if they sent them

Seriously, if you got a likely quit freaking out and be happy. It means your in. Thats all it means. Sure, if you pull a .2 GPA or you kill a man your not gonna get in.

I got a likely letter from the College of Engineering. It also said in the letter something about being a finalist for some scholarship. Anyone else hear anything like this? I'm not really sure what or how much the scholarship is. Btw I'm an asian male.

European white male (now living in the US) who just got a likely letter from Engineering with information about being a finalist for the Irwin and Joan Jacobs Scholarship. :-D

Does anyone know exactly what "finalist" means for the Irwin and Joan Jacobs Scholarship? I want to know whether I can withdraw my other applications yet... (lol!)

Oops, I thought that the other one was from HE.

either way your in, at this point worrying about exactly how the letter is worded is just semantic quibbling, although I understand the discussion of scholarships.

By the way, I thought ivy leagues couldn't give out any scholarships. How are they giving out these? Is it an alumni association or something?

Congrats to everyone who got them, I sure wish I had one! I can't wait much longer

ehiunno: The scholarships cover only need-based aid, but take the place of loans and work-study [at least, this is what the one I'm a finalist for does]. Thus, I won't have to go in debt for college, which will be nice. :D Just another Ivy loophole... lol, like "likely letters" themselves. :P

It was an automatic application thing; the letter said that they were "particularly impressed" by my application and that I have been selected as a finalist for the scholarship.

The letter said nothing about need, and I did not apply for financial aid, so I doubt the Tanner "grant" or whatever has anything to do with financial need.

Ah, sorry, I was referring to the scholarship I was offered; I generally assumed all were the same principle, but I suppose not. :P

are these grants and scholarships only offered for US citizens?
or for internationals as well?
cause it seems like most people got them in their letter
but only US citizens got letters, internationals got emails
