Likely Letters: A Strange Phenomenon

I am an international applicant. I recently read about something called a ‘likely letter’. Please explain:

 1. What is it?
 2. When does one receive it? Do international students get one?
 3. Should I panic if I don’'t get one?

Thanks a lot

A likely letter is a informal letter given by some admissions offices to their top applicants, people for whom admission in extremely likely. You shouldn't panic if you don't get one because these letters are only sent to the very top applicants. Plenty of people get in without them. I'm not really sure about your other question.

Does Penn give out likely letters as actively as Dartmouth does?

I don't think they send out any to non-athletes

Only a few colleges do that and Early writes (very similar, but instead of hinting, they give admission):

Dartmouth
Northwestern (Possibly only for minorities)
UVA
UNC
Duke (~350)
Yale (~100)
Grinnell
Wellesley
Cornell

Early Writes:
Amherst

I actually had thought that Upenn does do likely letters, anyone care to clarify?

^Just for athletes.

Williams does early writes as well.

so does SEAS at Columbia

penn definitely gives likely letters to applicants. i know someone who got one.

athletes get a huge majority of them. it helps the schools recruit during ED. don't sweat it at all if you didn't get one.

They send likelies to some of the MRP kids too, not just athletes.

well, i thought Penn did likely letters to everyone who applied...

like Wellesley??(well actually only Early Evaluation applicants)

o yea, by penn likely letters i mean they give them to non-athletes.

Well who has gotten a Penn likely?

I know someone who heard back from the Nursing School / Wharton dual degree program. Is this considered a likely?

reptile233-
i don't think so, since admission to the Nursing School is on a rolling schedule, so Nursing-Wharton dual degree would also be rolling.
