So like many of you others, Columbia is my absolute dream school. It's killing me to wait until April 1st, and being in Texas, I haven't had much contact with them. After a quick look through the message boards, I'm seeing all these posts about likely letters and interviews, none of which I even knew existed. Now I'm EXTREMELY afraid of getting my decision on Thursday, because I didn't get a likely letter OR an interview. Does anyone know if those are important things to get?

And in case you feel like chancing me--
SAT: 2340, ACT: 35
Rank: top 10%
SAT II: Math 750, Chem 730, Bio 750
AP: four 5's, one 4, 5 more this year
EC: orch, band, volunteering, mock trial, nothing special :(
National Merit Finalist

Applying to SEAS

For those of you who are nervous: you are defintely not alone! Good luck to everyone who applied!

Columbia is definitely one of my top choices. I haven’t gotten likely anythings but I’m not too nervous… Just wait it out and if they like you they’ll take you. Good luck!

likelies are given out to a small proportion of each class, the majority of accepted students do not receive them. Interviews do not affect chances much, many kids who are interviewed are ultimately rejected, many kids who are not interviewed get in and get rejected as well. So I guess your chances are slightly worse, given that you haven’t received a likely, but I emphasize slightly. The vast majority of RD spots (there are ~1600-1700 in total) are yet to be known.

I don’t want to reassure you that everything will be ok (anyone who does is deluding you), because even with those impressive stats, columbia might waitlist or reject you, but you should have a better than average chance. I was accepted RD without getting a likely. Honestly, with those stats even if Columbia doesn’t take you, you will get into a really great school, probably in the same league as Columbia, so don’t worry too much about it, columbia is awesome, but you could be extremely happy and successful at other places as well.

sorry if i sound stupid, but i could not figure out what an RD spot is ? and also what exactly are likelies? i’m a junior so i’m not a well-versed in all of this… haha sorry

RD stands for Regular Decision (as opposed to an early application plan)

Likely letters (or emails) are sent to top applicants (used to be just for athletic recruits, now also sent to some people the school thinks are just extra-special) a few weeks before the actual reply date to tell them, more or less, that they will be recieving an offer of admission on the reply date.
