Planner, I just wouldn’t call it a lock if it’s way early in the game. There are so many issues.
@planner03 Where are you getting those statistics on African-American students from?
^ @planner03 I’m also curious- I’ve tried to find applicants to Cornell and others divided by race, with no success. After visiting, one of my favorite things about Cornell was its diversity, so I’m sure the number’s pretty high.
I didn’t know fly in programs were so highly regarded! Which ones did your son go to @planner03? I just applied to a diversity fly in at Swarthmore and I have PEEP to apply to later… are there any others people can think of? I looked at BSAI but it appears from the website that it’s in the spring, so maybe it has already passed.
Thanks again!
Here’s a site with older data on number of AAs applying with their acceptance rates compared to overall acceptance rates.
http://www.jbhe.com/features/61_enrollments.html
For Cornell, the black acceptance rate is similar to the overall acceptance rate.
@theloniusmonk , that is actually a very interesting chart. However, it’s quite out of date now, being nine years old.
Here is the most recent one for RUs:

And here is the most recent list for LACs:

Yes, I got the info from the source @Lindagaf posted.
@SuperGymnast_04 There are so many fly-ins!! I don’t think I’m allowed to post links for other college blog websites but two good sources to google are “get me to college 2017 diversity fly ins” and “college green light 2017 diversity fly-ins.”
My S went to WashU, Penn, Williams, Bowdoin, Amherst, MIT, JHU
He was accepted to but declined fly-ins to: Columbia, Chicago, Pomona, Washington and Lee, Whitman, Colby, Middlebury
Others fly-ins off the top of my head that he didn’t apply to: Rice, Harvey Mudd, Scripts, Bates, Lehigh, Lafayette, Emory, Wesleyan, Colorado College, Barnard, Colgate, Hamilton, Davidson, Carleton, Haverford, Grinnell, Kenyon, Mt. Holyoke, Oberlin…
BSAI is not something you apply to. It is a visit sponsored by Duke’s BSA for accepted students.
@planner03 - so there are fly-ins before acceptances go out while the student is applying? Didn’t know that, thought it was just for accepted students (early and RD).
@theloniusmonk Yes all those I mentioned and many more are during Sept, Oct. and early Nov. pre-application.
For fly-ins, be sure to ask the admission office about them because I know of some colleges who are not on the list who have done them in the past like Ohio State and Purdue. For the OP be sure to reach out to the admission staff in charge of recruitment for AA students or “multi-cultural students.” Sometimes there will be events targets at URM students in your area. For example when my DD was applying, Cornell had an event for URM students where they gave fee waivers for applications and the regional admission director walked students through the application and gave my DD tips for applying. Also be sure you are aware of deadline for fly-ins because some fo them fall over the summer.
@itsv Cornell CALS is one of my top choices! Do you know what the name of the program your daughter did was? I don’t think I’ve seen any fly-ins for Cornell, but I have been looking.
Get on the multi-cultural list and ask for info on fly-ins and local events. The fly-ins may have been for STEM urms. https://admissions.cornell.edu/living/diversity/multicultural-recruitment
Here is an old announcement about it. I know there is also one for women in engineering too. hqttp://hosted.verticalresponse.com/293966/68d3cb4f04/1384000618/fd68e62f52/
