Likely Letters

Dang I hope ^ is a ■■■■■…

Likely letter today! (My stats are in some Princeton EA thread, if you’re interested.)

Non-athlete, non-legacy, Asian, though.

Holy crap you guys are insane

@hpyscm, I’ll take that as a compliment lol

Got my letter today, super pumped! It’s great to know that I’ll have at least one amazing school that I can go to, even if I end up being rejected from all my other schools! Now I just gotta play the waiting game. (Non-athlete, non-legacy, unhooked, no-name public school, Asian. Just an interesting essay, peer evaluation, and activities!)

^has anyone on the east coast gotten any?

DD got one in Virginia today. She is thrilled, as are we. What a fantastic Valentine’s Day gift!

@floraandfauna and @Deffjing, what were your stats?

I got one today.
36/2360/800/800/800/790/Valedictorian/NMF/StudentBodyPresident
16 year old.

I was deferred from Harvard, so this is really a stress reliever! SO EXCITED!

Any internationals get them?

Sent from my SGH-T959P using CC

Did you guys get it in the mail or email?

Snail mail

Thanks Deffjing! and congratulations!!

I got a likely letter yesterday.

Got a likely letter today up in Alaska!
I’m definitely surprised. I’m a non-athlete, white, undecided major, and never actually even submitted a peer review.

2400 SAT (superscored, 2 sittings)
770, 730 SAT II
Valedictorian (of a class of 5, so definitely not that impressive)
4.0 (Never had an A- or below)

I thought my essay was very good though, and I have a lot of musical accomplishments to my name. Teacher recommendations were tear-jerking works of beauty, especially from my counselor/principal.

Anyway, I’m really excited. Congratulations to everyone else who received one, and good luck to the rest of you!

Once again, congratulations everyone! No likely for me, but I was COMPLETELY surprised with one from Columbia today. Goes to show how the unexpected always happens! And remember to keep your head up, no matter what happens between now and March 28. Admissions is a mysterious, unpredictable thing beyond the understanding of us mortals haha :)

Is this by snail mail or email you guys? Not at home right now and stressing.

Wendeli: By the nature of your question, you seem to be hoping for a Likely Letter, a natural impulse. However, the very nature of Likely Letters means that no one should logically expect one. To devote a single iota of worry/concern/longing for one is foolish. To those who get them, great. To the rest – it means nothing. The smallest of the small percentage of applicants get them. Most of the admitted students will not see one ever.

Who gets 'em? The creme de la creme – superstars who are likely getting multiple Likely Letters from most schools applied. Those whom multiple elite colleges are vying for. If this is you, great. If not, so what?

T26E4, that makes sense. Thanks for the insight.

I guess it is alway possible that a student who gets an acceptance from a flagship state university starts making deposits for housing & accept financial aid offers and other incentives (honors programs) etc. In other words, decides to settle for whatever state u rather than wait for the top choice / ivy with a 10% acceptance. So, I could see why an elite college would want to reassure some kids with a likely. Perhaps give the rest a “Dear ABC, Admission to xyz ivy is need-blind … we’re interested in you, your talents, and your potential–not your ability to pay.” letter, just to make sure they do no bolt to the flagship state school.

I think it’s more base than that. The top school will see that among their applicants are some clear superstars that they know, will be highly courted by other colleges. They issue a Likely Letter akin to sending flowers to a crush. They want to openly declare their intentions/affections in order to hopefully, get a reciprocal response from the student. LLs are marketing tools
