Hey, has anyone gotten anything yet? I am pretty sure this is early, and that people usually get the first round of likely letters sometime in the first or second week of February. So, I wanted to create this thread so that people will have a place to start posting as soon as they receive them. While we wait, it would be much appreciated for some of the regulars to inform us more about likely letters (such as how many are given out/ how it all works).
Thanks!

ridonkulous0 - I was thinking of the same subject this morning. Does D mail Likely Letters? Are LL primarily associated with athletic recruits or are they also for notable acedemic performance/ standing

If so, it sounds like the first round is often mailed around the second week of Feb. Thanks for this great info.

The process of sending out likely letters has been in place since 1990

Although these letters merely suggest that certain applicants are "likely" to be admitted, Furstenberg told The Dartmouth these letters usually ensure acceptance. For the 10 years that the policy has been in practice, only two students have been refused admission after receiving such letters.

Class of 2004 (they only sent out 300, so the # of letters has incresed over time)

There are at total of 500 likely letters mailed out. They are sent out as students are admitted, usually to the students that they most want to attract.

Dartmouth Likely letters run in approximately 3 cylcles for RD candidates starting in mid february and are sent out by the Dean of Admissions and Financial aid. A sample likely letters is as follows:

My purpose in writing is very simple- we have reviewed your application and think you are an outstanding prospect for Dartmouth. I recently read your folder and was exceedingly impressed with your academic accomplishments and intellectual potential. There is no question that when we mail our final decisions at the end of March, you will be offered admission to the College.

I see no reason to delay letting you know about the status of your application, and I hope this early indication will "ease your mind" a bit. The college admissions process is unnecessarily long and anxious for many students. So, relax, get back to that book you meant to read, and use this time to reflect on your plans and goals for the next phase of your education.

If you have any questions about Dartmouth, please let me know. In the meantime, best wishes for the remainder of your high school career.

If you search likely letters in the dartmouth forum, you will see postings of students who have received likely letters over the past few cycles.

I hope this helps.

Some will invite students to sign up to attend Dimensions (minor point because all RD students are welcomed to attend Dimensions. ED students are also welcomed but they have to make their own arrangements to attend and find someone to host them).

Please, Please, Please do not panic if you do not get a likely letter. Remember the majority of the students admitted to Dartmouth will not receive a likely letter.

Thank you sybbie. Your post was very informative. I was wondering if you could please confirm the estimate time of arrival for these likely letters. I also second sybbie's request not to panic if you do not receive them. My friend last year received a likely letter from Harvard, but not Dartmouth, and he actually got into both. I think for most people, they might not have even read your application by the time likely letters are sent out.

I think the first round goes out around mid February and approximately every 2 weeks after that (the letters used to be sent out on tuesday)

but, don't forget that there is a new Admissions Sherriff in town; i.e., there is no guarantee that the Likelies will continue.

Good point, but they have been sending out likely letters for as long as Lakiris has been part of the admissions staff (coming out of undergrad). I don't see her changing up much on this but you never know...

yea, i have a question myself. Around a month after applying to Dartmouth I was emailed back scheduled for an interview which is now tomorrow. does anyone know what this means. Are my odds of getting in good/bad?

It just is what it is, you have an alumni interview scheduled. It means nothing one way or the other.

Good luck

Thanks for the info sybbie, really appreciate it.

Expect one in mid February.

I've asked this before, but do deferred applicants get likely letters if they are going to be accepted RD?

I should think not; Michelle Hernandez's book (she used to work in Dartmouth Admissions) states they review deferrees for 2-3 days in March. Any truth to this? Also if I plan to send a last letter to my regional rep restating my interest and new ECs/academics, etc., when should I send it?

Will the decision to send the first wave of these letters be made before, or after, the adcoms see the midyear reports? (I'm just wondering, since my senior grades are actually the best among all 4 years)

I was wondering the same thing about the mid year reports. Anyone know?

re: Michelle H -- remember, her data points are going on ten years of age, now...

Likely letters are sent as the admissions committees review completed applications.

well its almost the second week in February, hopefully the first round of LL will be mailed soon.
if you are fortunate to get a LL, will you also receive an inital FA statement? Or do they wait for 2007 returns to be filed?

You probably will not receive a financial aid package until you you have submitted all of your FA documentation. You will recieve that FA package when you receive an official admissions letter.

has anyone gotten one yet? when are they usually sent out?

Given that the ED letters were timed to arrive on 12/12 for the Class of '12, I predict that the first wave of "love letters" will arrive today, Feb. 14th.
