Likely letters?

Does CMU send "likely letters"?

yeah, they do. it may be a school-specific phenomena though, because each one has their own admissions committee.

What does the letter say? You don’t mean the one they send after the interview do you?

You guys got letters after the interview??

i received an email a few weeks after my portfolio review from one of the professors who interviewed me. i don’t know how common that is for cmu, but it is definitely a thing that happened!

^ I don’t think that letter is a likely letter. A likely letter comes after you send your app and indicates that you’ll be admitted on decision day. If you get a letter before you send in your app, it isn’t a likely letter at all.

the portfolio review is a component of the application that is done after you’ve sent in the paper portion. I’m under the impression that even though it wasn’t sent via post it is still considered a “likely letter” in the sense that it did indicate that I would be accepted on decision day. :)

I guess it works differently for non-CFA applicants. From previous threads, it seems that CMU doesn’t send out likely letters for ED or RD non-CFA applicants.

volynsal1- yes son received a letter after the interview that was encouraging- stated that his interviewer had recorded several “flattering remarks on his behalf”. It did not state he would be admitted - he had not even applied yet.

I would venture to say that the letter after an interview is not in any way to be taken as a likely letter nor is it indicative of acceptance possibilities. It’s a polite acknowledgement of your efforts to partake in the interview as it is not something that is required.

However I think that I would place more weight on a letter from a CFA professor sending you something directly (not a form letter).

CFA weighs the portfolio review/audition heavily in the admittance process.

KEYSMASH- wish you the best of luck. Now comes the hardest part- affording CMU…

^ Actually, PA-C is referring to a specific type of letter that hasn’t been seen until this year. Some applicants, myself included, received a letter after doing an interview with an admissions officer stating that he/she recorded positive remarks on our behalf. Although its definitely not a likely letter, I don’t think it was given out to all interviewees. Based on the ED discussion thread I started, it seems that everyone who got such a letter was ultimately admitted into CMU (for either ED 1 or ED 2). I realize that my thread isn’t a representative sample of applicants, but I thought my findings were worth mentioning to anyone who got the “remarks” letter.

Thanks fate - son applied RD so this info about your observations is encouraging!
