likely letters?

Hey guess, I'm actually a UPenn kid, but a kid I know is applying early to MIT; he said that he is close to acceptance and when asked what that meant he said MIT has a multi-tiered acceptance program and he was told he has made it to the final round. . .I've never heard of anything like this happening at other schools but thought you guys would know MIT better than I would. So, does MIT alert you if you are likely to get in (please note he isn't a recruited athlete or musician but is essentially claiming to have a likely letter)?

No - he is mistaken. Everybody finds out on Wednesday.

In five years of stalking the admissions blogs, I have never heard of likely letters at MIT.

thanks guess; I figured he was bs-ing it but I didn’t know for sure. . .I’d still like some more input though. Has anybody else heard anything about MIT’s decision program that would indicate likely letters for regular applicants?

He’s wrong :)

I remember MIT’s website to explicitly say they do not do any sort of ‘likely letter’

yeah, likely letters or anything like them sound very un-MIT

Thanks guys; i guess it really doesn’t make much difference one way or another, but I was just curious to see if MIT had some crazy new program or if the kid I know is just cocky and bragging about getting into MIT before the decision date.

MIT does not send likely letters or any other sort of early notification.

From Matt’s blog, [here](http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/apply/the_selection_process_application_reading_committee_and_decisions/likelihood.shtml):

One exception might be a Questbridge applicant who made it to the QB finalist status but was not matched with MIT for the College Match scholarship. That wouldn’t indicate admission to MIT in the way a likely letter would, but would be a confirmation that the applicant was a strong candidate.

Toldja so…
