I recently heard about something called a likely program. Can someone tell me about it?

Yale sends you a letter in January/early February saying it really, really wants you, but it can't officially offer you admission until April 1 - so, basically you can relax because you're in.

These letters generally go to athletes, but each year about 50 to 100 of these letters are sent to non-athletes. If you get one, you'll want to frame it. : )

AnotherMom, do you know if any other ivies or stanford sends these likely letters?

Wow it's that good eh? Would it have been a really bad idea if the admissions officer called you to congratulate you, and during your conversation, she asked you whether you applied early anywhere and I told her I got deferred from another Ivy? Do stupid things like that ruin "likely" chances? Hahahaha Excited and Anxious at the same time...

Oh and I'm a student from east coast-ish Canada, Ontario.

RBtrix, you received a likely letter from yale?

I know someone who received Clear Admit letters from both Yale and Stanford, so yes, other schools do this too.

are they recruited athletes?

I would like to see the stats of one of these non-athlete students!

RBTrix - Ontario's on the East coast of Canada? lol

I got a likely letter from Yale (not recruited athlete or URM). I have to say I'm flattered and it really is a nice gesture.

i don't guess getting deferred EA is a good indicator that a likely letter is on the way.
ha

kakashi, congratulations. I think getting that letter must be a wonderful feeling. Just wondering if admissions is sending to exceptional applicants in all academic areas or just certain ones...for instance, is your intended major science, are you an intel finalist, arts, etc.? Is there anything you can tell us about your application in particular that you think was the reason for the letter, or are you just all around a very competitive applicant? Thanks

Wow, nice, kakashi. :D Do you remember when you got the letter?

Yeah, that is amazing. Congrats kakashi!

congrats.... so like how firm are these phone calls or is nothing really for sure till you get the letter?

wait, so stanford does this 'likely' program too? what about princeton or Upenn?

Bumping to see if anyone has anymore specific info on these likely letters (i.e. just atheletes, science majors/intel finalists, humanities, etc).

The person that I know did not receive a likely letter, but Clear Admit letters from Stanford and Yale. There is a difference. Clear Admits are people who are not necessarily athletes, intel finalists, etc, but whose application is so strong, that the admissions committe is very excited to offer them admission, so they find out they are accepted about a month earlier than everyone else. The person who recieve these was not an outstanding athlete or anything like that, but his essay were EXTREMELY strong. Great SAT scores, recs, etc. From what I can tell, Clear Admits are "normal" people who come across as having a real love for life/convey a certain excitement in their applications.

I think that Likely Letters, on the other hand, are given before application deadlines to attract certain people (like atletes, intel finalists, etc) into applying to the respected schools.

I hope this helped.

They cant have clear admit letters because the ivy league signs a pact that they wont admit anyone before the date that everyone else hears. This is why atheltes cannot get an admit, but only a letter that they are likely to be accepted. Yale does not give clear admits. They give likely letters to some outstanding students who are not athletes to say that they should be accepted in the spring. THey cannot be defintitely offered admission.
