I don’t mean to add fuel to the fire, but my husband worked in the bronx for over 25 yrs( 1981 to 2007) with the FDNY ( most of which in the Fordham area and when my DD was researching colleges Grad HS 2007), my husband adamantly forbade her to consider/apply to Fordham, due to safety/crime concerns. She ended up at BC which is in a very safe area, and is very happy with the Jesuit education one experiences going to a Jesuit school

 1. Beautiful Campus (Rose Hill) and location (Lincoln Center)
 2. Library (Rose Hill)
 3. Jesuit Education
 4. Small class sizes (only 2 institutions including Fordham ranked in the top 100 have 1% of the classes with less than 50 students) according to 2008 US news rankings.
 5. Networking/Relationship with the top firms in NYC, more specifically for accounting
 6. 3/2 program with Columbia and Case Western Reserve
 7. 4/1 program (BS and MS/MBA in College of Business Administration)
 8. Commitment to improving facilities (spending $170 million for new facilities at both campuses)
 9. Alumni - 3 billionaires and many millionaires that constantly give back

Dislikes

 1. Cafeteria
 2. High Tuition (but nonetheless worth every penny)
 3. Incompetent sports programs
 4. Students with LOW sat scores (it’s about time Fordham stops accepting students with scores lower than 1200) and increases its school average to 1300. It is around a 1230 right now. Does not help our reputation as one of the preeminent institutions of learning.
 5. Small Asian population.

If you really want to know how safe the area is around Fordham then put yourself on a google alert. I was shocked to learn that there was indeed on average a student mugging a week the first couple months of school. At least two cab drivers were shot and robbed. Google registered sex offenders for the area where you live and then Google registered sex offenders for the Bronx. Your eyes will pop.

The food is terrible at RH, and the air quality (from the building projects??) is terrible in the dorm rooms.

Local bars are “Fordham Friendly” which seems to mean they serve the underaged…and then hope they stumble back to their dorm rooms by group because they are, you know, stumbling around the Bronx.

And then to make the picture all the rosier…

I love NYC. It’s fantastic. It will be there for a person to enjoy after they have attended college in a less threatening environment.

Goingtobebroke and her husband had it right.

There are no safety concerns with the University itself as people on here are making it out to be. You have to be a total crackhead to get mugged. Obviously, you are asking for it if you are roaming around the Bronx streets alone 3 in the morning in a drunken state. The campus itself is very safe with a security van patrolling 24 hrs a day and emergency buttons all over campus. You also have a Ram Van that will pick you up from the subway stop/local bars and drop you to campus after certain hours. Basically, safety is not an issue if you have your head on straight. Never did I or any of my friends ever encounter any problems while we were on campus. And as for registered sex offenders, you have that all over NYC, whether you’re in the Bronx or the Village in NYC. Welcome to NYC!! Maybe you aren’t cut out for it :)

Goingtobebroke, that’s the most ludicrous thing I’ve heard. Safety concerns should be last concern for a Fordham student. Many good colleges are situated in relatively unsafe locations (Columbia, John Hopkins, etc), but that doesn’t mean that students should stop applying to those schools. As for you and your husband that forbade your daughter to apply to Fordham due to safety concerns, The other 27,400 applicants that applied this year are just stupid and aren’t concerned about their welfare - right?

starburyknicks if a person is considering Fordham they should know the complete picture. There are students who apply to schools in cities where they have never visited and may not know what a rough area it is. You are totally out of line saying only crackheads are mugged at Fordham or in the surrounding area. Do your research before you get on a college forum and post untruths. Are we to think you are a typical example of a Fordham student? I certainly hope not.

How in the world you can disparage a person who has served the NYFD is beyond me.

First of all, when did I disparage anyone? I just said that the 28,000 students that applied must really be misinformed.
Secondly, you or anyone else can think what they want about me or any Fordham student. No one is obligated to attend the school.
And the full picture is this. The safety concerns with Fordham students are incidental. Pull out the stats for me and let me know how many of those crimes happened in the broad daylight on Fordham road. The campus is completely safe since I lived on it for three years. I didn’t state any untruths - maybe a hyperbole by stating only crackheads get mugged but the point I was trying to make is that you just have to be careful and watch your own back - it’s like with any college that is situated in a “bad area.” Things can go wrong anywhere whether its Columba, NYU, or Fordham; some situations are just unfortunate and unavoidable.

And look at post #22 if you want to see the full picture. I’m not some blind Fordham lover or a ■■■■■. I stated what I think is true and I still think that safety should be the least concern for a Fordham student; there are enough controls in place to make one feel safe.

NYFD? Try FDNY.

Does the Ram Van driver carry a gun?

Is it true that students get mugged about once a week?

Seriously? You’re obviously NOT from the area and maybe the big bad city fears got to you…why else would you bump this thread?

Safety should be a concern for everyone, everywhere…on or off any college campus. It’s a fact of life. It doesn’t mean that Fordham students should be terrified all day, every day because they are in the Bronx or NYC. Street smarts are a necessary life skill if you ever want to leave your house no matter where you live!

Wait a minute, “students would rather pay to use the ramvan…”

You have to PAY to go from one campus to another for a class? Seriously- you pay $53,000/yr and they nickel and dime about this?? It was NOT mentioned in the school tour. How much is the fare?

I’m pretty sure the Ram Van is free if you’re taking a class at another campus, but if you want to use the Ram Van for leisure you have to pay a fare.

If you’re using the van to get to a class on the other campus, then it’s free. Otherwise, it’s only $3 one way (compared to the $2 subway fee you will pay). It’s fastest, “safest,” and the most convenient way of getting into the city.
