Lil Wayne ... The best rapper alive?

What he does best is market himself and his music. This is the true genius of this rapper. He has some great music, but has he really proven himself as the best rapper ever? I don't think so, but I do enjoy his music.

Mike41691 I was listening to hip hop when you were still swimming in your fathers sack...
I went to the muse and beatbox when I was a kid in NY and saw rakim, grand master flash and many others who started it all...
There are exceptions to the rule, but most hip hop is simply pop music now, filled with ignorance. It does more harm than good.

i think that most of the people who claim that lil wayne is not one of the best rappers alive is because you do not understand his lyrics. the words that you all are claiming to be garbage, nonsense, or whatever actually has some type of meaning that you all just might not understand. seriously his metaphors are some of the best that are floating around right now. just because he doesnt choose to rap about the economy and politics does NOT mean that he is not a good rapper.

Birdman put them niggas in a trash can

Half of the game too lazy
Still sleepin' on me but I'm bout to wake em

and what about songs like georgia bush and black republican?

Lil Wayne is seriously the best definition of the word \"overrated\".

He can barely make out a coherent sentence. Not to mention, he mainly raps about himself, just degrading his reputation that much more.

janetlover, thanks for reaffirming our point that F. Weezy Baby :D is indeed garbage. If you try to argue against me and for those lyrics, oh my... I can write a 10-page dissertation on how and why he sucks based on those lyrics.

then please do...

Jay-Z's the best rapper out right now and Kanye's got the best beats. The Carter III isn't anywhere near the level of Late Registration or American Gangster in terms of lyrical quality, flow or beats.

right now? even if you don't like wayne, he is NOW. people are listening to wayne the most even if these people "know nothing about da rap game". radio stations (power 99, 100.3 beat--> Philly) can not stop playing wayne. jay-z is on two of wayne's tracks (a billi, mr. carter), kanye is dishing out beats on the carter III. my one friend who loathes rap is now a wayne fan because of his different witty lyrics. wayne is different and he's separating himself from the rest of the unoriginal rappers in the game with their lame beats and boring lyrics.

But some time that tragedy means its over, soulja

I deny being down though they seem to hold us

But they talk that freedom matters, and didn't even leave a ladder, damn

I, knock on the door, hope isn't home,
fates not around, the lucks all gone
don't ask me whats wrong, ask me whats right
and ima tell you whats life
and did you know?
I lost everything, but I ain't the only one
first came the hurricane, then the morning sun
Excuse me if I'm on one, and don't trip if i light one, i walk a tight one
They try to tell me keep my eyes open
my whole city under water, some people still floatin
then they wonder why black people still voting, cause your presidents still chokin
Take away the football team, the basketball team
now all we got is me to represent New Orleans
no governor, no help from the mayor
just a steady beatin heart, and a wish and a prayer.

let's pray.

and is you come from under the water then theres fresh air
just breathe baby, gods got a blessing to spare
yes, i know the process has so much stress
but its the progress that fills the best
cause i came from the projects straight to success
and your next, so try they cant steal your pride its inside
then find it and keep on grinding
cause in every dark cloud theres a silver lining

As one of my sage colleagues said the other day, \"rap music used to be about personal impressions about ethics, politics, universal issues and motifs, and whatnot. Today, it\'s about aimless vulgar topics...\"

Sigh, let us cease this thread of futileness.

Good night everyone.

clearly you do not know much about rap so I'm confused as to why you posted here. did you not read the lyrics i just posed? Tie my Hands - Lil wayne... full of personal impressions, politics, and a universal issue. Hell, that came from Lil wayne of all rappers.

anyways, my rebuttal.

i'm glad you think that song is motivational and inspirational. well you know what... rap can be too. and although this is my own opinion, there are innumerable rap songs more influential and inspirational than middle by jimmy eat world.

don't post here if you're going to generalize rap because you heard 50 cent on the radio. anyone can easily diss any kind of music genre. you can diss rock for unoriginal power chords, or ear-pounding heavy metal songs. truth is... although you may not have a penchant for such genres of music, there is always something behind the lyrics, the beat, the guitars, the drums, the saxophone et cetera.

don't generalize. rap isn't the same as it used to be, but the meaning, deliverance, the lyrics, the beats are still there. i'll admit... lil wayne probably isn't the best example, but he's entertainment, exciting, and can get you pumped up. it's all subjective preference.

please, let us not generalize.

Wake up. Good Morning.

AKittka,

If you truly know about rap, you'll realize that Jigga (=Jay-Z in case you don't know, like you don't know the rap game at ALL) has dominated the past decade, along with Nas and his Illmatic in 94. Jay-Z will continue to dish out better lyrics and top the charts in the years to come. Weezy's hot now; I admit that, but this phase will soon pass. Southern rap is just garbage (I usually don't generalize like this considering I'm one of the most liberal, accepting people you'll ever find), but please, it is GARBAGE. I'm not into that political rap scene either, just ordinary rap, and right now, that rap comes from NY, Chicago, some parts of NorCal, LA, a little from Baltimore, and Seattle (True rap fans, am I missing anything?). I will stop posting; this is ridiculous, seriously.

\"i\'m glad you think that song is motivational and inspirational. well you know what... rap can be too. and although this is my own opinion, there are innumerable rap songs more influential and inspirational than middle by jimmy eat world.\"

Um, I never stated that rap wasn\'t motivational and inspirational....

\"don\'t generalize. rap isn\'t the same as it used to be, but the meaning, deliverance, the lyrics, the beats are still there. i\'ll admit... lil wayne probably isn\'t the best example, but he\'s entertainment, exciting, and can get you pumped up. it\'s all subjective preference.\"

You miss interpreted my post, it was against Lil Wayne. The meaning varies from artist to artist. No, Lil Wayne is not an example of what you are trying to imply, Tupac is one. Seriously though, Lil wayne raps mostly about how \"awesome\" he is. That\'s is my main point. Once again, not trying to generalize, I love Tupac\'s creative lyrics.

Good night.

immortal technique

superficial... how could anyone interpret your post when you just took a shot at rap in general. no where did you reference tupac, or lil wayne for that matter.

and azs what makes you the "true" rap fan lol? because you think so?
[/quote]

jay, if you didn't know they called him that too, will not top the charts in years to come. i am a true rap fan. don't tell me i'm not... seriously.

Everyone keeps saying that Lil Wayne is the best because many people listen to him. I'm sure people said the same thing about Vanilla Ice at one point. So, how do we judge best rapper? Is it the one who has the best beats, most creative lyrics, most meaningful lyrics?

Most rap critics assess rappers based on lyrics. Hence, the credibility of Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and other rappers who are "socially conscious" (they hate that label). On the other hand, the population judges rappers based on their reputation and beats (and * sometimes * lyrics as in the case of Eminem). I mean, look at 50 Cent, Kanye, Jay-Z, Outkast, and Lil Wayne. Some of them have lyrics that are OK, but most are popular because of their beats, that's it.

And, a lot of times, good beats require dumb lyrics. At one point, one of my favorite rap groups was Black Eyed Peas. Their first two albums, "Behind the Front" and "Bridging the Gap" had some of the best lyrics I had heard. But, to make these, they sacrificed popularity...so, they used the formula:

GOOD BEATS + ANY LYRICS = HIT

i think his problem is, is that he comes out with Too much songs. If any of you guys ever listened to any one of his mixtapes, and i mean the whole thing not a song or two, youll see that most of his songs on mixtapes are complete garbage. Hell come out with a mixtape that has 15 songs and of those 15 maybe 2 would be good, while the rest would be complete garbage. I mean he can at least make some of the other songs decent, its like he doesnt try on most of the songs on a mixtape except for 2 or 1 of them

Weezy has nothing on Jay-Z.

Lil Wayne has mass appeal. It may be his "swagger", unique flow, or ability to make nonsense make sense. Probably a combination of those characteristics. Everyone wants a Wayne verse on their album. His lyrics are hit or miss ("I'm hot like light"?????), but usually says something ridiculous that keeps me listening. It's great that he consistently puts out new music. I enjoy his music, but I don't think he is the best rapper alive.

I think the two best mainstream rappers in recent years are Jay-Z and Lupe Fiasco. I can listen to American Gangster and The Cool straight through without skipping tracks. Their flow and lyrics are always on point. Jay-Z is definitely not a conscious rapper, but I like how he can rap about some generic subject matter and still make it interesting, somewhat reminiscent of Biggie. Lupe has arguably the best flow in the game and comes up with great concepts. I can always listen to those two.
