Anyone else a L&P major? I am having trouble with picking my classes for Spring 2011. On assist.org, it doesn't list any pre-reqs for my major , however, when I go to the UCLA's website it lists some other classes that I should take. Which one do I follow? I have talked with a UCLA counselor and she told me my chances would be high if I was to finish the foreign language requirement for Linguistics, but she never mentioned any of the classes that were listed on UCLA's website. I will have complete the foreign language requirement by the end of Spring 2011. I am asking this because I am not sure whether I should take any more classes or not. I am already at 69 units, and by the end of the spring semester, I'll probably have around 75 units.

the prereqs for linguistics and philosophy major are a second 1 year equivalent of a language course (so in total, you need at least 2 years of one language, and at least 1 year of a second different language; my languages were spanish and latin), and intro to linguistic theory (ling 20). if your CC doesn’t offer an equivalent to ling 20, then you can probably take it here. you should try to get your foreign language requirement done as well for the additional one if you can.

i’m not in the major yet, but i’m planning on petitioning to add to my regular philosophy major as an easy double major (turns out i only have to take like 5-6 more classes.)

you should know though that the major makes you take philosophy courses which specifically pertain to language. This means that if this is your only major, other classes like ethics, metaphysics & epistemology, and history of philosophy won’t apply.

The cool thing is, the L&P major doesn’t have the language restriction that normal linguistics has, so you can take two languages from like indo-europeon for example, whereas the reg. major prohibits this.

good luck with the major and finishing the prereqs.

@beyphy thank you for your insight! i currently go to SMC and they don’t offer any linguistics classes except for Anthropology 7 (Introduction to Linguistics Anthropology). I am not sure whether if this is the one equivalent to the one you took at LACC, Linguistics 20. What do you think? As for the spring semester I will be finishing my second year in Chinese (4). I also have Japanese 1 down, should I also take Japanese 2?

Also would it be wrong not to take any Philosophy courses?

i didn’t take linguistics 20 at LACC; i’m taking it right now at UCLA lol. Linguistics 20 is UCLA’s name for Intro to Linguistic Theory. I don’t think intro to anthropological linguistics is an equivalent. If it’s possible, try commuting to another CC. The closest i think in your area is west L.A. if you can’t i’d doubt it would be too big of a deal, you’d just take it here since the major’s pretty unimpacted and you have a lot of the requirements fulfilled.

you already have both of your language requirements fulfilled, so that’s good. As to whether you should or shouldn’t take any philosophy classes, that’s up to you. i only took 4 when i transferred (didn’t know i wanted to major in philosophy till my last year) but out of those four, 3/4 fulfilled prerequisite requirements. If you have all of your prereqs done, you should be fine.
