Anyone Planning to Transfer as a LINGUISTICS Major???

I didn't know whether to post this topic on the "College Majors" board or the UC Transfers one, but decided to write here anyway, because I'm mainly looking into UC's for transfer purposes...

I just want to know.... is anyone in the same situation as I am about the linguistics major requirements being EXTREMELY vague?

I'm trying to take as many courses as I think would be connected with the Linguistics major, but I feel like I'm trying to put together puzzle pieces (as I'm trying to figure out what courses to take). I'm hoping to transfer as a Linguistics (with Spanish emphasis) major.
I decided to switch majors (from Business Administration) this year, and I've been taking as many courses that are related to Spanish and what not... but I'm really not sure what else to take.
Courses (Pertinent to Linguistics, I'm assuming) Include:
-Spanish Literature (Span 205 @ my school)
-Spanish 1 & 2 (fulfilled through AP exams--Read my other post regarding "IGETC, AP Scores, Courses, etc...!")
-Spanish 3 & 4 (taking this semester)
-Chinese 1 (1st semester Chinese)
-Chinese 2 (2nd semester Chinese--taking this semester)
-Chicano/a History
-Mexican Art History (taking this semester)

If the courses are offered next semester, I'm planning to take History of the Americas (1 & possibly 2?), Chicano/a in Contemporary Society...?, Chinese 3 (if offered)...any other ideas?
How are you guys fulfilling the linguistics requirements for the various schools?

I think it’s the same at every ccc because my friend is trying to transfer as a Linguistics and Philosophy major but he says there are no linguistics courses. Just complete IGETC and take spanish courses and you should be fine. good luck!

I was accepted to UCSD as a linguistics major. The only prereq was a general intro to Linguistics course, beyond that just fulfilled the IGETC.

Linguistics doesn’t have a lot of course requirements at most universities. That gives people time to study specific languages. So you want to be spending time doing that, at least one in depth, perhaps two if you can manage it.

Ahh, that’s good to know.
I’m HOPING to transfer to UCLA as a Linguistics major (with emphasis in Spanish), so I’ve basically exhausted all my Spanish options at my CC thanks to AP courses and a general love for the language!
Oh, and second language? Chinese.

Thanks guys!

You may have exhausted your options at your CC, but you should find a way to continue your studies if you hope to pursue Spanish at UCLA.

manerzzzz!!

I want to be a linguistics/spanish major at ucla too! no joke haha.
either that or linguistics and chinese…haven’t decided…hm…coincidence!? lol

i called them way too many times to count and they said they know that it’s hard to ge tall the classes b/c comm colleges, generally, don’t offer many linguistics classes :(

But hey! they said it’s a lot easier to get into ling. than business lol. As long as you have like at LEAST 3.5 and A’s in all the classes for prereq’s I’m sure things’ll go well :P

BTW–where do you go that you can take chinese 3!? I’m at moorpark (it’s awful btw!) and can’t find anything more than a chinese 1 course :(.

i am starting community college in the spring and my major is linguistics too. i might do a emphasis in a foreign lang (maybe Italian or French i dont know yet). I plan on taking both french and italian this spring semester. So should i just get all my igetc done and the into to linguistics class that my community college offers. They only offer one class. Does that sound like a good plan? I wanna transfer to USC, UCSC, UCSB, maybe CAL and UCLA.

@houselover-You’re lucky your CC offers an intro to linguistics course. What CC are you at? I’ve talked to countless counselors at my school and the UCLA rep that comes to our campus, and they basically told me the same thing. Take as many language courses as possible as well as culture and history courses pertinent to the major.

I am also strongly considering doing linguistics and spanish at ucla after I transfer from Moorpark cc. When I spoke with the ucla rep, she said that with honors, you’re good with a 3.0, otherwise, probably a 3.5, but it’s still easy to get into. As long as you just take a good amount of Spanish, you’ll be fine. They’re really understanding about CCs not offering linguistics.

how many languages do uc’s expect you to have under the belt if you’re a linguistics/philosophy major?

@manderzzz- sorry this is so late I have not check this website in a couple months but I am going to attend Diablo Valley college in pleasant hill,ca. And they offer only one intro to linguistics, but its is not accepted as a intro course at UCLA, UCSC, UCD and UCSD and it is only accepted as a intro class at Cal. Thats what I saw on assist.org. So I will take that class but it wont transfer over as a pre-req for the major unless i go to cal.

u can always petition that it be recognized as a prereq. that’s what I plan on doing for classes that weren’t articulated.

really, I might try to do that, I dont understand why Cal would recognize it but not the other UC’s, usually its the other way around. I will try to petition it thought, thanks for the advice.

Generally linguistics are upper division courses and there are only a few California community colleges that offer linguistics classes. There is no Associates degree in linguistics. Monterey Peninsula College offers a number of online linguistics classes that you may be interested in. They all transfer and satisfy GE and IGETC. If you have any questions, send me an email at rabend@mpc.edu and I can give you more information.

@ houselover05
I am also a linguistics major at DVC but I was not aware that their intro to linguistics class was transferable to Cal. Where on assist did you see this? Is it a pre-req for the major?

I live in LA, so would there be any problem if I enroll in Monterey Peninsula College for their online Linguistics classes?
