Why did they choose to call themselves “The Movement” and why did they need to list 39 demands?
Skiing is one hobby that some students have, but is not the most favorite thing to do on campus.
Reaction on campus has been swift. The Student Assembly pointed out that demand IV under Concerning Institutions falls under it’s jurisdiction, and added elections will be held soon and sometimes candidates run unopposed…hint hint. The student newspaper editor’s have given their opinion. Some students feel embarrassed by the national attention.
The Movement is claiming that their pressure caused the administration to offer need-blind admission a few years ago. I don’t know if that is true or not. But, demand IX under Concerning Students wants “several” financial advisors to be hired solely to find scholarships and financial aid for people of color. They list books, travel expenses, and medical fees as items that need to be paid for by someone or some entity. This strikes me as immature.
It seems as if there is one thread after another challenging people of color always implying that their requests are ridiculous. However when the nut cases in positions of leadership want to kill muslims or there is other racist attacks against minorities not a word is uttered.
@citymama9 , re: post #33 - Everyone should have a voice in their community. Don’t you expect to vote in the town you choose to move into? Don’t you feel you have a right to criticize the spouse you chose to marry or the children you chose to bear?
If a person of a color makes a request that I consider ridiculous, am I not allowed to call them on it? Or do I need to remain silent, for fear of being labeled a racist?
Who are the nut cases in positions of leadership that want to kill muslims, and what did they say?
belknappoint see post 55 above. Hillary Clinton referred to his comments to the college students as hateful and deplorable and giving aid and comfort to ISIS and radical Jihadists. I hope that helps
@woogzmama I’m all for having a voice, but some of the demands are obnoxious. The great thing about this country is that there are so many colleges and universities and they all offer differ things, different demographics, different vibes. For example, if I was poor I wouldn’t move to Greenwich CT and demand they shut down the country clubs and expect them to open dollar stores in the downtown. Instead, I would move some place that I would be comfortable and that had a more diverse socioeconomic group. If there is true discrimination at Hamiliton then that needs to be looked at, but to demand they hire a black president etc is silly.
I will now utter some words: that guy is an idiot. If he was my employee, I would fire him. If he was running for office, I wouldn’t vote for him. But he’s got a right to express his opinion, however stupid it may be. And obviously, others before me have already uttered words decrying what this moron said (see your reference to Hillary, above).
I think the students should demand a strengthening of the rigor of the freshman English composition courses. The current program has obviously failed them.
Every Hamilton undergrad has to take two or more writing intensive courses before they graduate. I guess there wasn’t enough time to proofread their list.
I am a student of color at one of Hamilton’s peer institutions. These are my first impressions of the students’ demands:
We demand a President of Color for the twentieth President of Hamilton College.
What will this solve?
** We, the Students of Hamilton College, demand the immediate institution of free tuition for all Indigenous peoples.**
Hamilton’s already a wealthy college. Doesn’t it offer sufficient need-based financial aid to “indigenous peoples”?
We demand the immediate institution of gender-neutral housing for all class years, including freshmen
What a strange request.
We demand the college to begin the discussion of reducing binary-based language starting with replacing he or she with “they pronouns.”
These kids will be quite shocked once they start learning languages that aren’t English.
I wouldn’t say they’re “ridiculous”, except for maybe their demand for a president of color. They’re mostly just strange.
Yes, it is an odd bucket of requests…and such poor spelling combined with such big words. I’m not convinced this is for real, as opposed to two bored freshmen making a “statement” or being silly.
Not really, especially if they mean allowing for gender neutral roommate arrangements.
Then again, I attended a college when gender neutral gender roommate arrangements had been offered as an voluntary opt-in option for undergrads…including first years since the late 1960’s. In that context…it’s not only not too strange…but shows how Hamilton is well behind the curve in this respect.
Another instance of being well behind the curve as some HS teachers were already requiring this in some of my classes…cept we used he/she or s(he) in the early-mid '90s. This continued into college where the use of the gender neutral “zie” started to come into vogue in some classes.
Here’s an example of how this current movement can stretch into extremism. At Lebanon Valley College, students are demanding that “Lynch Memorial Hall” be renamed because it reminds them of lynching. Mr. Lynch was the President of the college for a couple decades and a major donor.
Hamilton College has gender neutral housing available.
Housing is available through a lottery system. Students who draw one of the first lottery picks can pull-in up to 6 other students (depending on which building you choose) to live with them. So most groups on campus are accommodated. Study Abroad students can pick their housing option through a proxy.
