Southern Illinois Edwardsville and Southern Illinois Carbondale both have direct admit nursing programs. SIU-C added direct admit this year, fall 2021 will be the first incoming class.
Grand Valley State (GVSU) is no longer offering direct admission. From their website:
âStudents who are admitted to the university as a degree-seeking undergraduate student may apply to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program for Traditional students through competitive admission or direct admission until Fall 2020. Starting in Fall 2020, all students must apply through the competitive admission process.â
Just back from URI tour. We were told, in no uncertain terms, that URI Nursing is direct entry, and all freshmen admitted to the program is guaranteed a spot for the full 4 years.
Iâm still not convinced about URI being TRUE direct entry, when reading the fine print. We toured, D22 applied, waiting on answer. But I am skepticalâŚ
Does anyone have thoughts on URIâs fine print? It states:
Entry and Progression Policy
⢠Entry into the College of Nursing is competitive and seats are limited. Students are required to have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a grade of âCâ or better in all prerequisite courses to be considered. Entrance into the College of Nursing and clinical course sequence is not guaranteed once meeting these requirements. Placement is competitively granted based on success in prerequisite criteria. Those who meet the minimum criteria but do not achieve a seat will be considered the following semester, in the same competitive manner. The College of Nursing and clinical course sequence is determined at the close of the spring and fall semesters.
That URI fine print looks like competitive secondary admission, not direct entry.
However, be aware that some direct entry programs have high weed-out requirements (e.g. where a student must earn a 3.5 GPA each of first four semesters at Arizona State) that, while transparent and non-competitive, may result in many direct entry students being weeded out.
Exactly! Yet, at the info session & tour, the admissions speaker claimed that URI is indeed direct admit for nursing, and every student accepted is âguaranteed a seatâ for the four years of the program. It was such a specific comment in the face of that fine print, I find it all very concerning. I did not question it at the time but I certainly would question this point if my daughter is accepted and seriously considers this program.
You can receive your bachelor of science in nursing after completing the prerequisites in the pre-nursing program in your first year. Unlike most schools, Loyola offers a direct admit to the nursing program for pre-nursing students enrolled in the program who earn a grade of a âCâ or better and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in all prerequisite courses.
Developed in partnership with Ochsner clinical faculty, the curriculum is a blend of theory and evidence-based clinical practice providing a foundation to prepare for the NCLEX licensing exam and success in a broad range of nursing and healthcare roles. Most students will be able to complete the pre-nursing and nursing curriculum in four years.
In your last two years of study, youâll complete eight clinical rotations to develop floor-ready skills under the supervision of professional healthcare providers. Youâll explore the following nursing specialties throughout your clinical experience:
University of South Florida isnât really a direct admit program. The student gets admitted into the freshman nursing pathway and has to do an interview and keep nothing lower than a B to be admitted. For their upper division (traditional BSN) program, the admitted student prereq gpa average in 2021 was 3.9. Like most large state schools, itâs below 25% that make it in. Over 400 attempt it and many are disappointed that they donât get in.
Wondering who else got into the new 4-year direct admit Elon nursing program. My daughter was just accepted, early action, which means we are now on the hunt for as much information as possible. Wondering how the new Elon 4-year BSN program compares to the longer standing 4-year BSN programs to which our daughter has also been accepted (Creighton & Belmont). Happy to share our research and would love to benefit from the research of others!
Updated to include George Mason University. They have started a direct admit program. They take 112 students a year, plus save 20-30 spots for sophomore year transfers. Admit rate about 13%.

Need to add University of Rhode Island. I know there was debate in the past whether it was direct admit or not but my daughter is starting this fall and it is definitely direct admit!
URI just recently changed their requirements and the Nursing Program is now direct admit. I confirmed during a recent tour and info session with my daughter.
