I don't care if it is a research uni being compared to LACs, Tufts is not on Williams and Amherst status. I truly don't think so. The only reason they have comparable stats for incoming freshman (which BTW, W and A have higher scores) is because Tufts scoops up all the great kids that get rejected from HYP.

"where i live, no one has heard of sterling, virginia."

I was born in Alexandria, and where I used to live, fairfax, noone else heard about W&L...Suffice to say people in northern virginia simply haven't heard much about W&L

I am just wondering why I have seen the Air Force, Naval, and Coast Guard Academies on their states' lists, but no West Point in New York! (Unless I missed something.)

firewalker, i simply cannot take that statement seriously. i have lived in richmond with my father every summer since i have been 10; everyone i have met here is very imressed by W&L. i am not sure if native virginians consider richmond a part of northern virginia or not, but it is one of the biggest metropolitan areas in the state. i have yet to meet anyone here who not only has not heard of it, but also does not think highly of it.

How could you not have heard of W&L if you live in NoVa?

Ok, I have to disagree with you because Tufts is definitely on the same level as Amherst and Williams, and if Amherst and Williams are so great, how come they don't scoop up the great kids who are rejected from HYP.

New York

1) Columbia
2) West Point -- United States Military Academy
3) Cornell
4) Kings Point -- United States Merchant Marine Academy
5) NYU
6) Cooper Union
7) Vassar
8) Barnard
9) Syracuse
10) Fordham

what about colgate? and while i agree with you in that kings point is highly underrated , it is not number 4 in the state on ny.

Tony: Kids that apply to Harvard usually don't apply to LACs. Kids who apply to nationals do not usually look much at LACs and vice versa. I thought this was common sense.

Really, b/c I applied to Harvard and Williams this past year, I guess I don't have much common sense.

Colgate and Fordham were a close call.

Kings Point is right up there. The only schools harder to get into in NY than Kings Point are Juliard, West Point, Cooper Union and Columbia in that order.

I know that's not all you base a school on but its one good measure. And if you want to go to sea, there is no place better in the country.

Okay I feel better, I had to share my growing West Point pride. (I am the girlfriend of a new cadet, class of 2010).

Kate

Have you been checking out the West Point threads? Good stuff on what Beast is like.

Good Luck to you and your NC

HOOAH!

Yes, I saw the post from the new cadet that was made yesterday... sounds a lot like what my NC said on the phone - how amazing a situation, where I am just elated to get one phone call in the space of 3 weeks!

(sorry if I'm starting to go too off topic everyone, I'll stop now...)

Well, you're on cc, so you know about great colleges that are not really known to the general public (such as Williams and Amherst). Most great students only really know about the ivies and top universities because of the press they get and simply because they're bigger so they can reach more people. Also the small size and the fact that the LACs are unknown to most people doesn't appeal to some.

Bro, this list is so off... Grove City whatever the hell and Duquesne arent even close to the top 10 in PA. Hell they arent top 15....

"can someone do top 10 for VA?"

1) UVA
1) W&M (tied for first)
3) Washington and Lee

---big jump--

4) James Madison
5) Sweet Briar/Hampden-Sydney/Roanoke College/Hollins
6) VCU/ODU/Hollins

Richmonddddddddddddddddddddd

richmond is better than jmu, but not as good as W&M/ W&L.

W&L doesn't have the name recognition, I know its not representative, but most kids from my school are attending JMU or Tech. Noone is attending W&L. There are also kids going to other VA schools like GMU and VCU...the situation here is similar to that of my friends at other schools...

Another example: TJ...look at the majoritity of VA schools that they are attending, W&L is definitely not among the top of the list...

Only 3 applications to W&L...Say what you will, the statistics speak for themselves.
