I'm planning to spend some time at the gym next quarter, but I have a question. I usually listen to music on my iPhone; would it be acceptable to bring one in and just put it on the treadmill, or is in necessary to get an armband? Is it even common to use an iPhone like that - I have an old cheap player as well, maybe I should put that to use instead?

As long as you are wearing earphones it wouldn’t matter.

An armband is the smart way to go, I’ve seen lots of Ipod/phones broke at the gym…keep it safe.

Personally, I think the Ipod shuffle is the best for the gym.

… I see people do it all the time

Bring a BOOMBOX, and play just one song repeatedly, as loud as it would go. That’ll get people going.

If I am running on the treadmill, I hold it in my hand. However, if you are planning to lift weights or whatever, you may want to invest in an armband.

It really doesn’t matter. Bring what you want, listen to what you want. As long as you are not disturbing someone else, it is fine.

Yeah that’s fine. An armband is niceif you want to also listen to it while you’re doing weights or resistance machines, but for the treadmill, just bringing it in and setting it on the machine is totally okay.

I think an armband is a good investment, but certainly not necessary. I do have an armband but I don’t always remember to bring it with me, I just put my iPod on the elliptical/treadmill. I see plenty of other people do so as well.

shuffle! :)

I just use my pocket for lifting and my hands for when I run.

Use a cheap one plus an armband. I wouldn’t want my iphone sitting around when I’m lifting/sweating etc, and the armband is much more convenient than the thing falling out of your pocket all the time.
