This isn't applicable to me at this point in time, but I'm curious. How would you go about listing an award that was given to a group or team in which you had a significant leadership position? For example, my school's newspaper won the 2004 Columbia University Scholastic Press award. While I don't know how prestigious the award is, in such a situation, would there be a way for the paper's editor to include the award on the application in a way that emphasized his commitment while still making clear that it was a group effort? What is 'protocol' for that sort of thing?

Yes, indeed this should be listed for anyone who worked on the paper. In the resume or on the EC form, there is space for explanation and this EC might go something like:

School Newspaper: Editor (12), Section Editor (11), Staff writer (9, 10) on paper that won the 2004 Columbia University Scholastic Press award.

My kids had an Activity/Award resume. The awards or achievements associated with an extracurricular activity, went WITH the listing and description of that activity. Only academic awards had a separate category. So, if her sports or arts activity (or like your newspaper) got any individual OR group achievements, it was recorded with the activity entry, under that entry. So, yes, if your group achieved something and you had a role in that, include it. Like if her team was second in the state, she listed that under the description of that sport activity. It is nice to have both group and individual achievements.

My son did the same thing: EC awards listed with the EC, academic awards listed separately. For Mathletes, he was was on a select team competing at States, so that was mentioned under the activity, along with the award they received.

Thanks everyone for clarifying; that makes a lot of sense. :)

Start accumulating your list over the summer - sometimes you have to go digging for the exact title of an award. Better to do it now than when you are trying to get apps submitted this fall.
