listing other colleges

so is it okay if not totally honest?... rice is by no means a safety, or even a match, but it is on the lower half of my list in terms of selectivity and I don't want to give them the impression that I probably wouldn't go if I got into a more "prestigious" school.

I'm probably just paranoid, but is it alright if I leave off a couple of the ivies, etc.?

They prefer you're honest. My interviewer told me that flat out ...she said it annoyed her when students thought that the admissions office wouldnt guess...or investigate further if needed. They're not stupid...

Be honest

I put Stanford, Cornell, JHU, CMU, Tufts, Chicago etc.. my whole list and Im at Rice now.. so I dont think it hurt me

lol thank God they know.... I was a bit scared to put the schools I am applying to..........I put it anyways

good... honesty cant hurt you in a system where all is supposed to be fair and evenly evaluated

in the college admissions system things are anything but fair and evenly evaluated.

I wouldn't feel as paranoid as I do if my list weren't so long, but I'm in cali so I'm applying to a lot of UCs (none of which I particularly want to go to). When your list is as long as mine, that's considered a negative.

I heard they mostly use it for statistical purposes, and to be able to say "our overlap schools are Harvard, Caltech, etc." I doubt it'll hurt too much - Rice is a good enough school that with finaid/location/other things, one might choose it over JHU, Chicago, or even Ivies, so they're not going to reject you just because you might not enroll.

just be honest.. thats the botom line.. and I agree with dally, it is probably used for statistical purposes

but the space wasnt enough to put all the schools i am applying to.... I just put as much as the space could take. Is that okay??

we cant tell you... although Id assume ud be fine

my situation is the same as maddy_01...

i put my safeties/ match schools in and i ran out of room to put in my reach schools. is that bad that i'd only put a select group of schools and leave out the others?

xxxdogx:

Rice considers HYP, Stanford, Duke and MIT to be its peers;and in many areas it is equal to any of them, especially at the undergraduate level. If anything, listing HYP (assuming that you have a reasonable shot) might actually enhance your chances at Rice.

"So is it okay if not totally honest?" That is a question you should ask yourself.

Im really surprised that people are asking wwhether it is okay to lie...

withholding isn't lying. I'm not asking if people have lied on their applications, I'm asking if people have withheld.

I'm not sure what I'll do yet (I don't actually think it's that big a deal) but 1. it's amazing how self-righteous people can get, and 2. I'd bet the people who haven't listed all their colleges are probably numerous, but aren't as likely to post here as people who have.

If I were on the adcom and were reviewing an app from someone who clearly is qualified for peer univiersities but did not list any, I would wonder if information is being withheld. Perhaps the question is a test.

"a half truth is a whole lie"...
I dunno, I listed everything and I got in... but I was only applying to 5 schools total, and Rice was the most difficult one to get into (second was Northwestern in Illinois)

"I certify that the information provided on this application is accurate and complete and acknowledge that any omission or inaccurate information could jeopardize my standing with the university."

Sure, they probably won't find out if you applied elsewhere, but it's not good to start out your years of college already breaking rules.

they coud find out...

And witholding is a lie.. as you arent givving a complete answer

Rice isn't like Wash U.--they're not going to reject or waitlist you if they think you're going to get in to a "better" school and turn them down. They consider Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, CalTech, etc. their peers, so they will not think that you are considering them a "safety school" if you list other "better" schools. Lots of students (myself included) applied to--and perhaps got in to (not me)--the big three Ivy schools, and still considered Rice their first choice. It's just a very unique school, and there are other factors besides those that go into the US News rankings that determine how "good" a school is.
