Literature Help/Advice!

To all of those who have had great scores, particularly over 700, on their Lit. SAT II's: what advice can you give me? What should I concentrate on? What are the best prep books; is Barron's any good?

Any advice would be GREAT!

Thank You

the best prep is a solid high school literature course, in my opinion. it seems like this is one of the harder tests to "prep" for, per se-- review books can only help so much on this somewhat intuition-based test.

I took the test and did decent, I am going to retake as well. From talking to people this is what I found out: it is a very werid test, and your score can change dramatically based on how you comprehend one simple arcane passage. My advice is simply to retake and do not worry about prep, since really there is nothing you can do.

Well, this will be the first time I take it, and I won't be able to retake it. However, I have a natural ability for English and Literature. I got a 35 on my Reading ACT and a 33 on my English, if that makes any difference.

Any advice?

Anyone?! Please, I really want to get higher than a 700 on my first try. Any advice?

Do you know the basic literary terms (e.g. sonnet, iambic pentameter, personification)? If so, then don't bother reading the review chapters in prep books.

I recommend borrowing prep books from the public library instead of buying them, because it seems to me that the quantity of practice tests you take is more significant than the overall quality of the book. I took all Kaplan practice tests (eight) and three out of four Princeton Review practice tests, two of them the day before the test, ending up with a 780.

Look over the questions you get wrong and try to figure out why you got them wrong. Then gradually change your way of thinking to ETS's logic.

Since you did well on the ACT, you should be able to get into the mindset fairly easily. :)

Thanks! Yes I do know those terms, although scanning one of my prep books there were some I didn't, so I'll definitely have to review vocabulary terms.

My D took the test cold in her sophomore year and got a 690. In her junior year she spent a day or so preparing by reading the Princeton Review book for Lit subject test and took 3 practice tests. She scored a 740. She just improved her test taking ability. With a few more days study, I am sure she could improve the score again. Study technique and take many practice tests.
