Hey, I'm really, really interested in taking the Literature SAT II in October, but I've only taken two Honors English classes,(My first AP Eng. class is next year) do you think that's enough?? I've done some of the sample questions on College Board and they seem pretty easy. So, do you think with some light prep I could be prepared to take it?

bumpity bump bump

Really, the two basic things that can prepare you for the Lit test are (a) being an avid reader and (b) practicing answering the questions. I'd recommend buying some prep books and trying out questions. I did two or three practice tests in Barron's and found the real thing way easier, but there's never too much practice reading prose and poetry and then answering questions on the author's intent!

Also, it'll probably be necessary to look through the instructional material. You'll need to know a lot of basic literary definitions (I'm sure you've been learning 'similes' and 'metaphors' since 2nd grade, but a few of the questions on the Lit test will focus on more obscure terms.) This is the only area in which never having taken an AP English course may hurt you. (Taking a class that prepares you for the English Language or Literature test, for example, will make you a lot more comfortable with literary vocabulary.) But to be honest, not a lot of questions have really random words. Oh, and the Barron's instructional material is RIDICULOUS! You don't need to know all of the random stuff in there! I'd try to get a recommendation from someone who used a book with material that more closely corresponded to the test. The up-side to Barron's is that it has a lot of practice tests, and again, the best way to get good at answering Lit-type questions is to practice them!

I used Kaplan's and it helped and I've heard its good. But definitely practice a bit to be comfortable with the types of questions and terminology. Some of the poems might even show up! :)

I just did 2 practice tests out of the barron's book. I did REALLY badly on them though.... but I guess it helped me get a 750?

Just read a lot, maybe even practice speedreading. I'm a very fast reader, so I always have about 15 mins at the end to check all my answers

(I used Kaplan's book and got a 770 after getting a 740 on my last practice test.)

Good luck!

I did a Barron's practice the night before, but that was about it. As odd as it sounds, I think taking AP Lang this year helped...not sure what the AP Lit questions are like (taking it next year) but a lot of the information from AP Lang seemed to carry over to Lit. Also, I read a lot. I guess that got me my 770.

if you aren't an exceptional reader, you should not take lit. if you are, then a little practice should get you a somewhat decent score. make sure you know a few terms and don't get blindsided by the time situation.

I'm deciding if I should take the Lit. I wasn't exactly sure what it consisted of, so I took the test in the big Collegeboard book and got a 730. Considering I took that without any preparation, is that score good enough for me to prepare for and take the test? Keep in mind that I already have 800 on World, 740 on Math 1, and I'll definitely take Math 2 and Bio next year.

up to you ...
