Little Ivy to Boston College?

Hello CC!

I am a freshman male at a top liberal arts college in New England. It is not Amherst, but is a fellow NESCAC that ranks around 15th-20th in reports.

I am overall unhappy with my fit at school, and am looking into possibly transferring to Boston College, Lehigh, or Georgetown for the Fall 2012 Semester.

I was wondering if anyone could offer any insight to this practice, as well as my chances for this to occur. I realize that Georgetown is a reach, so I think the best fit overall would be BC.

As far as any 'hooks' go, I have approximately a 3.5 gpa first semester at this little ivy, am a URM, and will not be applying for financial aid.

On campus, I have a job, am involved in two clubs that meet for a total of ten hours a week, as well as play a club sport.

In high school, my stats (abbreviated) looked like this:
-3.5 GPA, 1950 SAT
-Honors/APs from elite public school
-Two jobs
-Leadership officer positions on debate, Keyclub, student council, and founder of an economics club
-Member of band and choir for two years, and have played a mixture of lacrosse, football, and soccer during my high school years
-NHS, Officer and co-founder of numerous clubs
-Two fantastic letters of recommendation (I could get one from the Dean of Students at my college)
-Student Ambassador Enrichment Program

I forget a ton of the other EC's due to it being over a year since I first did the CommonApp, but overall had a diverse application with what was told to be a very well written essay.

I understand that BC has only a 15% percent acceptance for transfers, but I think overall it would be an unreal fit for me and I would flourish both socially and academically there. I can get a 3.8 GPA next semester to help the cause. I would be looking to get into their school of Management.

So basically, do I have a shot? Can any users provide specific insight into their own experiences with this school, or the transfer process in general?

Your time is greatly appreciated!

LOL, I saw your post on WSO. But I do think you have a good shot at BC and Lehigh. Not sure about Georgetown, although I think Boston college’s forum has a transfer thread from last year so you can check that out to compare yourself with accepted applicants from last year. good luck!

A little ivy ranked 15-20? Honestly, where do you kids get this bunk? Honestly maybe AWSM can even be joked about that way, but LACs fall off pretty fast and there’s no LAC ranked that low that can remotely be linked with the ivy league.

What URM are you? Is that the highest ranked college you made it into last year?

Hahah too great nycdave… sorry I had to bore you twice.

Waverly – I went ED so I really wouldn’t know. I said 15-20 being generous. I did not coin it little ivy (nor really believe it), and I myself think that the term is pretty stupid, but for people who are familiar with that set of schools, that is what the seven or so are referred to.

I’ve worked in college admissions for 25 years and that’s bunk, pure and simple.

If you go to Williams, Amherst, Swat, Pomona, Midd, Wellesley, Carleton, you go to a top LAC and BC should not be a stretch. If you go to one really rated 15-20, it’s a stretch.

hds,

I think you missed the point that all of these ‘Public Ivy’, ‘Little Ivy’ (which is new to me), etc. categories are just silly. Also, do be careful when using Wiki as your ‘source’, it’s really very ‘lite’ and would not pass academic muster.

Waverly, I think that you’re honestly missing the point. Whether or not you would like to declare which school or group of schools are ‘bunk’ (really?), I do not see how it actually contributes to this thread in any positive manner.

My school would be a in the top ten if the president did not openly mock the rating systems and request to be off of the lists.

Based off my grades at my current school and my grade projections (reasonable) for the next four years, I am optimistic about the future. I have an internship at a bulge bracket firm in NYC this summer that I very much look forward too, and am an active member on numerous clubs on campus. I created this thread because I think that I would have a more positive experience at BC, and thus inquired to learning more about these opportunities/chances.

Have a happy new year

@entomom

I would recommend looking at the references section. There are 19 sources you can check out. lrn2wikipedia

Any further insight??

If you can rise that to ~3.6/3.7 you’ll be in a very good spot. Just make sure to get a good midterm report, and you’re chances are good. Also, hey, from WSO!

TransferMB, do you go to Wesleyan? I was deciding between Georgetown and Wesleyan (chose Georgetown).

Wesleyan is a good school…I don’t think BC or Lehigh would be a stretch. Georgetown, however, is a little harder to get into transfer… You’re still probably competitive, though. I basically agree with nycdave.

Not Wesleyan, but close.

I figured Gtown would be my shot in the dark. Thanks to all
