So I'm a freshman, and I just moved into Hedrick Hall yesterday morning. My overall UCLA experience (including orientation and other events) has been absolutely amazing so far-- everyone is really nice and helpful, and I just love the overall vibe of the school.

However, this is only my second night in Hedrick, and I'm already a little worried that I should've chosen to live in a plaza or suite. I am sometimes a bit reserved when it comes to meeting new people, so I put residence hall at the top of my housing application preferences because I knew I wanted to be in a positive and active social environment. However, I've found Hedrick to be really noisy. As I type this (at midnight), there is a huge group of people yelling, laughing really loudly, etc. from the room directly above mine (I wish I could close the window but it's too warm to do that). Someone on my floor has decided that now is the right time to practice playing their trumpet.

The last thing I want to be is antisocial, or a downer, but once classes start I will have a lot of studying to do (I'm a computer science major) and if things continue this way, then I don't know how I'll manage to concentrate on my studies. I'm torn-- I really want to become good friends with the people on my floor, but I also know I need to be free of distraction and other students' late-night goings-on for my own well-being (sleep being a main priority).

Will things quiet down a bit once classes start and the RA's lay down the rules about quiet hours? Or am I just being a nerd who needs to get used to the realities of college? Thanks in advance for any replies.

I don’t recall there being mandatory quiet hours other than for finals weeks, but you can tell people who are being loud to quiet down. If they don’t, you can take it to the RA.

But as you mentioned, it shouldn’t be this bad when school starts. People are just starting college and having fun right now so that’s just how things are now. Granted, I didn’t live in a hall (I lived in a plaza), but when I visited my friends in various halls, it was definitely not like that all the time.

Also, you don’t have to study in your room. There are lounges, library, etc. The option is there.

Yeah, I will definitely explore those other options, especially if things stay rowdy (though like we both touched on, I’m expecting/hoping it will quiet down at least a little once school starts). I’m just discouraged when it comes to the task of striking a balance between socially involved and academically minded.

No its the first night for most people so it’ll be loud, it doesn’t stay like that forever. You might have the morons on the floor though that decide that 12 at night is a good time to sit outside your room and talk on the cell phone while you’re trying to sleep or have a chit chat session with about 3 people outside your door, but most of the time it’s fine.

It’s the first week, everyone is eager to meet new people and no one has classes yet. Once people start forming their groups and classes start, it should quiet down some.

You can switch rooms with me. I’m at Sunset Village right now and the place is quiet. I’m looking at all the fat asses still eating at the Bruin Cafe.

For me, Hedrick tended to be really noisy… I rarely found a good study place in there. I had to go up and down to find a quiet lounge and more often than not an hour or so later people would come in and start talking. In the end, I realize that it’s better to use the study rooms downstairs (you can ask the front desk for a key) or go to covel and study. If the place is too crowded you can also opt for sproul hall study rooms or the deneve study lounge near the dining hall. Best way to do it is study elsewhere and then come back to the hall for socializing and the like. It won’t be too bad. =)

Oh, and it’s SUPER quiet in the afternoons. Night time was when things tended to get rowdy.

No thanks, click, I’m not interested in switching. My roommates and I get along really well. Rosedust, I’ve also been finding that it’s really quiet in the mornings, and most of my classes start at 11am, so I can probably fit in some study time before then.
