I’d like to live in my van at the Tempe campus parking lot so I can go to school. Does anyone know if it’s against the school rules, or maybe even against the law? Has anyone done this or know someone that has?

Common sense should tell you that it’s against school rules.

For all prospective students and parents (and anyone, current students included, who can lend advice) — Here’s a Class of 2018 ASU Facebook page !!!

Get ready… New Freshman are coming soon !!!

wait, im so confused
why do you have to live in the van so you can go to school? why cant you stay in a dorm?

I have known some people who were forced into a hotel (at the college’s expense) because there was insufficient space at the dormitory due to unexpectedly high yield. But as I said in earlier the college pays for that if this happens and they work hard to find you a dorm room if they guaranteed you a dorm room of course. I can’t imagine any college asking you to live in a van on the premises or even allowing that TBH. If your college has asked you to do this then you have grounds to avoid the contract IMO and reject their offer of admission because that is absurd!!!

Wow. Sorry. I didn’t realize I had any replies. I didn’t get notified, even though I have it set to notify me.

Tortoise5 and Axand238: I can’t afford a dorm. Plus, I’m an older student and think that would be kinda awkward for my roommate, and possibly me too. Are older students even allowed in dorms? I don’t even know if I’ll be able to afford classes when I transfer. I might have to take a year or two off and go back to work. It depends on how much financial aid I can get.

Jokahugo: I met someone who did this at another school and he said nobody seemed to care. But ASU has a lot of security and seems more strict/parking is more regulated than whatever school he went to. So I was thinking it would be a “No.” But still, I’d just thought I’d ask if anyone knew how ASU would react. And isn’t it like 300 something bucks for parking?! For that price, we deserve a camping space.

I found a place to live free, so I don’t have to live in my van anymore. Though where I live is still a 45 min.-1 hour drive away. I would like to be closer and am looking into living in the van somewhere else near the school. I hear that from the commuter parking lot to the classes is a very long walk and is like a mile away. But people might be exaggerating. I hope so… But I don’t want to spend so much time commuting. I’d rather have more time for homework. Whenever I don’t have much time it stresses me out and then I procrastinate. It’s the ONLY time I procrastinate, but it’s the worst time to do so! lol.

OK! well… do not live in your car please.

You being older does not affect your dorm choices. The dorms are organized by majors except for the upperclassmen which have more flexibility in their living options. Theres nothing wrong with padding your GPA and going to the community colleges around the valley for a year so you can get in-state tuition.

It’s too hot to live in a vehicle in central Arizona. It could be fatal. People don’t leave their dogs in cars. This is true for much of the school year, not just the very hottest summer months.

cjlawson: I’ve lived in Arizona for most of my life, so I’ll get in state tuition. I also recently signed this contract with ASU saying that if I graduate from CC in three years or less they’ll charge me whatever tuition was when I signed it, just in case they raise the prices. And I have some left over financial aid from previous semesters so that will help. But it still depends on how much they’ll grant me once I get into ASU. I don’t know if it will cover full tuition like it does for my CC. I have a little money to pay for the rest myself, at least for the first semester, but I like to save that for medical emergencies. I had one recently and it depleted most of my savings, so now I don’t have much left.

Parentof2014grad: I insulated the van and installed an ac system that doesn’t rely on the engine being turned on. I have batteries and a mini solar panel for it. I also have a little fan. It’s worked fine for me even during the summer!
