I know this will sound ridiculous but, I was thinking about living in a van while going to school and I wanted to know if this would be at all possible at Berkeley. From what Ive heard, parking is a ***** and I was thinking would it be possible to get a parking permit and do this at Berkeley? What do you guys think?

any thoughts at all would be appreciated. thanks :)

(BUMP)

Wow. Now this is an interesting thread.

More power to ya if you can. But why don't you just ask an admissions or housing dept. person?

To get a parking permit at Berkeley, you need a permanent mailing address to which they will mail the permit, and that address has to be within the parking zone in which you want the permit (the permits are apportioned by zone). Although, you could just get a friend who lives in the area to agree to let you borrow his mailing address.

UC Santa Cruz has a camping area for motorhomes. They let students use that for dorms. There is a fee that is much more than a parking permit though.
You may want to consider going to school there.

I am sure there is some kind of univ or city code against you living in a car/van throughout the school year.

I'm sure there's some state law that says you can't live in your car. I hope it all works out for you though.

I was wondering about parking too, is there any parking structures on campus which you can buy permits for

looooooool.

If you are that desperate, you might as well go around people's homes and ask if you can pay to park in front of their houses. I am sure there will be some homes..

Reminds me of the old Chris Farley SNL skit: "My name is Matt Foley, and I live in a van down by the river."

I would definitely help you pimp your van btw.

Woot!

i could just find some river to park it at ;)

I lived in my car for extended periods while attending junior college. Definitely not cool man!!! I had all my ***** stolen including my passport, birth certificate, and all my school books/hw in an armed robbery by the Santa Monica Pier at approx 1 am. You'll be so edgy watchin your back that you won't have the energy to commit yourself to anything 100%. If I could, I'd smuggle you in my dorm before you sleep on the streets. Seriously, if you have no choice and resort to living in the van, stay strapped, or get yoked before you get smoked. I have many tips on being a homeless student if you want more info. :D

ya man, send me an e-mail, thanks a bunch

hey hey, we're interested too. How do you survive being a homeless student?
