Living Learning Communities

Hey Everyone! :)
I'm gonna be going to FSU in the fall, and I'm considering doing a living learning community.. what are the pros and cons of doing these? Also, is there anyone who has done one before who can tell me their opinion on it?
Thank you!!

Hey! I’m in a living learning community now, Bryan Hall. :)

Pros:

You get to know most of the people in your community. Mine is full of 128 students, but I’ve met and hung out with the majority of them. Others are 20-40 students, and you all live on the same floor and dorm, so I would imagine that it’s an even easier way to meet people and make friends. Also, for most of the llc’s, you’re categorized by your major. A lot of you guys will have the same classes so you can have an extra study buddy, along with your in-house course. Each llc has a classroom inside your dorm in which you are required to take a class. It’s really convenient when you can wake up 2 minutes before class and make it there on time. That’s what I did last semester with my 12:30 in-house class. haha.

Cons:

You have to do a one credit hour colloquiam (I have absolutely no idea how to spell that word) once a week for a little over an hour. Mine was Monday nights from 6:45-8. That was inconvinient (again, can’t spell :P) for a lot of people who preferred to take night classes, or even those who liked morning classes and having the night to relax. But it’s just once a week, and I didn’t think it was that bad. All you have to do for the colloquiam is take 3 notes per session on a piece of paper they give you, turn it, and then at the end write 3 essays (one page each) on different presentations. It literally took me like 20 minutes to do all 3, and I got full credit. It’s a pass/fail course and is meant to be interesting and informing, just challenging. But besides that, which some people wouldn’t even consider a downside, there really are no cons. I think it’s a great experience.

My daughter is in the Social Justice LLC in Wildwood, and she loves it. As a matter of fact, she and 3 of her LLC friends are renting an apartment together next year. They’re very involved and have formed great friendships.

Right now, the So-Just LLC is in Orlando for weekend with the children of ‘Give Kids the World’ program.

Also, I believe next year the LLC shall be 3 credits, instead of 1. But check that, I’m not entirely sure.

Good luck!

Does anyone know about the Pre-Health LLC in Reynolds?

Ya does anyone know about the Social Science/Pub Affairs in degraff?

I have a few question about the LLCS
-Do you get official creditation for being in an LLC
-Can you quit whenever you want without any negative effects?
-Can you live with roomates that are not in the LLC (I applied for Degraff anyway)

 • How much time does take away from other things (Sports and friends)

I too, am interested in the LLCs, also does anyone know the perks of the honors halls?

Clauxy, I was in the Social Science LLC in Degraff hall. As to your questions:

-Do you get official creditation for being in an LLC
Yes. You get 1 credit for the colloquium, and 3 credits for the other in-house course you are required to take.

-Can you quit whenever you want without any negative effects?
Not quite. If you quit, then you will not be able to stay in your same dorm room, because the entire hallway is just for LLC people. You can get reassigned on campus. Also, because you’re taking 4 credits worth of classes, you would have to finish those. That being said, I know some people who left after fall semester.

-Can you live with roomates that are not in the LLC (I applied for Degraff anyway)
No, one hallway of the building is designated for LLC people. If you’re looking for a group to join where you’d have classes with people but not have to live in a certain dorm/with certain people, you should look into the FIG programs.

How much time does take away from other things (Sports and friends)
Not that much. The in-house course is like any other one of you classes, and the colloquium (at least for the Degraff LLC, but they’re all different) is one hour every third or fourth Monday night. Also, our colloquium differed from hsmloverrx’s. For ours, we watched movies and then had discussion nights about them. No writing required!

I’m interested in the LLCs took, in particular the Social Science and Public Affairs and the Social Justice. Any recommendations on applying to either since test scores and grades aren’t factored in?

I’m in the pre-health right now. All you have to do is attend a colloquium once every two weeks for 2 hours, and people come in and talk about their professions, i.e. a physical therapist, dentist, etc. It’s not that bad at all, and you get to live in Reynolds so that’s a plus!

^Okay thats cool, I plan on applying since my intended major is athletic training. Do you have any more info such as pro’s and con’s, or even your opinion of the LLC itself?

Hey torioreo, I have a question about Reynolds: About the Wellness agreement, how strict are they on that? And is it hard to follow? Any info on that would be great, thanks!

Yeah, definitely do that since the coordinator for our LLC is THE athletic training program leader…I know a guy doing athletic training and he’s in our LLC. About the contract, I’m pretty sure most people have violated it, I don’t know anyone who’s been caught, but I wouldn’t recommend staying here if you are going to drink…you may be able to get away with it once, but more than that may be pushing it :/

Hey does anyone know what the mandatory “retreats” are for the Social Justice LLC? Like what they have been in past events?
:)

Hey guys, I’m an incoming freshman who is doing the Social Science and Public affairs LLC at Degraffe. I was wondering how much work the mandatory class we have to take (the 3 credit one) is. Is it the same workload as a normal class or is it a piece of cake. I’m trying to decide wheter or not to take 18 credit hours this semester or just stick with 15. Thanks a lot guys.

On the topic of LLC’s, my son got into Cawthon as an incoming freshman. He’s a music major and was definitely drawn to the idea of the LLC. My question is, it appears LLC’s are for freshman/sophomores. If accepted your freshman year are you automatically accepted your sophomore year assuming you haven’t messed up royally, or do you have to go through the housing application all over again?
