Hello!
I'm going to be a freshman this year at University of Central Florida (Mech. Engineering) and my best friend and I are going to be roommates in the Apollo Community! But I just got an email saying that there is now an open spot for the LEARN Living Learning Community I applied for but got wait-listed. LEARN will give me a $500 scholarship, research and apprenticeship opportunities, and only 28 students get in. On the other hand, I will be moved to the Nike Community and not be with my friend, and we've mostly planned everything with our Apollo room. I mean, the point of LLCs is to make friends with people that have similar majors, but I'm already rooming with my best friend (Computer Science). Should I join LEARN?

Yes. Tell your friend you’re sorry but a better academic and professional opportunity opened up and you’re going to take it. If she’s a real friend, she’ll understand. Besides, you guys are going to the same school. It’s not like seeing each other will be terribly difficult.

I can see how that could put a strain on your relationship but if it is your best friend, you should be able to work it out in a civil manner.

Why don’t you try approaching them and seeing what they think about it? They may be totally open to it or they could be upset since it is so late notice.

Personally, if it was me, I would just transfer and deal with the backlash later…especially considering that your roommate already knew you were wait-listed and had a potential to be accepted.

Sticky situation so good luck :D
