Living off campus - anyone know about these companies/places?

I had trouble retrieving previous posts on this, so sorry for a repeat question…

My OSU student and a roommate are frantically looking for an off-campus place - but not “too” off-campus. (We’d prefer he stay on campus). We are uncertain of places they are finding, and while not new to apartment renting - spouse and I have both done it - we were not living in a large city or near a university with constant rumors of bad landlords, companies, and, these days, bedbugs! We are only now becoming familiar with the area.

Right now they have located some places near campus, one by Hometeam Properties (?), I think also My 1st Place. Anyone know of these companies? I know one property is on 17th - but son didn’t say which end.

They are so pressured to find a place so quickly, it really makes us concerned. If they knew the area and so on, maybe we wouldn’t be so concerned, but really - they and we as parents don’t have any idea of what is decent, what’s not, location, etc. Anyone familiar with these companies? Or know of another one to look at? So many mixed reviews, it’s hard to wade through them…

Thanks. I will check there, too. I think the area they located something is on E. 17th, east of Summit. Couple of comments make it sound sketchy, but we really don’t know the area well enough to make a true assessment.

I personally would attempt to stay west of Summit. Things start getting pretty bad once you pass Summit going east. The rents are less, but there is a reason for that.

I agree with rleffler. I wouldn’t go past Summit.

Thanks for the comments. I had the names of the companies wrong, so never mind that, but I think maybe one property is about 1/2 to 1 block east of Summit. Maybe they should look elsewhere, although it may be too late already to find anything decent.

My son lived right at Summit and 15th last year…and it was fine - but like I said, I wouldn’t go west of Summit.

He has also rented from Hometeam properties for 2 years - and they have been just fine to deal with.

Hope that helps! Good luck to them!

My son has rented from George Kanellopoulos OSU Properties (http://www.osuproperties.com/</a>) for the last two years. They have been pretty good to work with.

The places are going fast, we’re finding! He may end up in a dorm yet just by necessity…

Anyway, they might have an opportunity for a house apartment in the Iuka ravine district, around Woodruff (east of High)? Is this a decent area? I know it’s supposed to be pretty, which is nice, but more interested in safe!

I live west of Summit (between Summit and 4th.) It’s a very small block compared to the distance between High and Indianola - contrary to what others are saying, I don’t feel unsafe living this far (as a female), though it can be a pain to walk. I would feel comfortable living on 17th and a little past Summit. The bus route goes right by there.

The further away you go, the more likely you are to be living in a bad area – but there’s not a magical line you cross after which things become sketchy. Living on one side of summit is not at all different than living on the other side. I actually think staying very close to high street is a bad idea, because High is less residential and where all the late-night traffic is.

I only wouldn’t go very south on the east side. Chittenden and on has a bad reputation, but on the west side of High that’s a nice area where the med and law students live.

Iuka is nice. It’s all pretty safe if you keep your wits about you (locking doors and windows, being aware of your surrounding, not walking around alone late at night even if you’re a guy.)

Does anyone know anything about the 12th and Indianola area?
