I'm having a really hard time to decide whether to go to LMU or Santa Clara!
Suggestions would be appreciated thank you!!!

eee12345, you might want to provide a bit more information. Major?, etc.

My S was accepted at both SCU and LMU and I have a D at LMU. We did the open houses at both campuses this past weekend. I have to say my wife, son and I were very disappointed in SCU. It was just blahh. My S is computer science/engineering admitted and I was looking forward to hearing the enthusiasm from faculty about the program. I know it is very well respected. But it was sooooooo blah. The whole open house. And, in my opinion, the campus is far inferior to that of LMU. I don’t think that my S will opt for either LMU or SCU. But he dropped SCU from consideration and still has LMU on his list, for whatever that is worth.

Wow, last years LMU vs SCU admitted students days were a tough call. I would agree LMU had more bells and whistles, but SCU was MUCH better than we remembered from my daughters visit in 2008, and their engineering program seems quite a bit bigger. I think the specific program you are looking for might make a difference, and there are some minor differences in their students like SAT scores, GPA, sports emphasis (Basketball, woman’s soccer) ethnic and geographic diversity, but the biggest difference is probably going to be the location.

@jamestg – i’m planning on majoring in Business.

Not extremely important but SCU is on a quarter system, whereas LMU is on a semester system. Each system has it’s pros and cons.

@Shrinkwrap - We live in SoCal so did the CPSLO, SCU and LMU dog and pony shows last weekend. Raining during the event at CPSLO, but they adjusted amazingly. There was a lab tour and the room was too small for the parents and students so the CS Chairman asked the parents to wait in another classroom. Once settled, he came in and sat with us for over an hour answering questions about the school, etc. He was very candid about the intensity of the program but very generous with his time. At CSU, the head of engineering gave his pitch to the masses and disappeared. The rest of the CS program consisted of sitting in one of the classrooms while one of the professors read his powerpoint slides. That was it. LMU’s CS program is TINY. Only about 20 incoming freshmen. ALL of the school’s professors were in the lab and gave a brief presentation before breaking up and sitting down with the incoming students, individually, for about an hour. SCU was glaringly inadequate.

@eee12345 - I’ve heard that SCU is well-respected as a business school but I honestly don’t know anything about it or LMU for business. If you haven’t already, be sure to schedule visits over the next 11-days! May 1 is rapidly approaching.

eee, so if majoring in business is important to you, there are some things you should be aware of. To compare, SCU was rated #35 undergraduate business school in the US, in both Businessweek and Bloomberg. LMU was rated #93 by one, and not even ranked in the top 113 colleges in the other. 2012 Payscale return on investment rankings (basically what the cost is of the degree compared to many years of income) ranked SCU #31, and LMU #146.

You may not be firm on your major, and there may be other variables that are important to you…ie how much the cost will be, location, etc. But if you are looking at the strength of the business school, SCU is a powerhouse, with internships in the Silicon Valley, supposedly so many they can’t even fill them all. I’m sure LMU may have other majors they are stronger in, but as far as business, there is no comparison.
