LMU vs UCSB vs SCU?

Hi, this is my first post here though I've been reading these forums for a while now... anyways my dream job has always been in the music industry somewhere, so I've always wanted to major in business (MBA) with a minor or dual major in some music industry related course.

Now, I've gotten into SCU, LMU, and UCSB, and cost-wise they're all going to be around the same level, so that's not a big factor (aside from maybe the financial aid from UCSB won't be there in a couple years due to budget cuts... might wanna take that into account.)

Coming from a jesuit high school Archbishop Mitty that is a feeder school to LMU and especially SCU, I know exactly what to expect at those colleges, which some consider 'rich and snobby'. I'm not too concerned about that, but more about the cliques that form at these colleges (something I always hated in high school because I often had multiple friends from different groups and it was difficult to hang out or party with all of them). UCSB however, being a much larger campus, doesn't have this problem and overall I much prefer the atmosphere and environment there (yeah I know its a party school... thats a positive for me lol)

Anyways here is the biggest problem though... UCSB is my dream school in terms of people and environment, but it only has a Business-Economics major, which from the course descriptions doesn't look too appealing to me. SCU has the safest bet for me as its close to home and a highly regarded business program, but again I'm not sure if it would land me the job I want. LMU on the other hand I am certain will help me get the career I dream about, but I don't know if I want to go through another 4-6 years (if I MBA there as well) of the same experiences I had in high school.. :/

The whole purpose of college for me was to get out of my environment, but since UCSB has business economics (I don't even know what it is... it just sounds confusing from what I've read its mostly math) I'm not even sure if its the right school for me. When I read the course descriptions at LMU I actually got excited and eager to study there because everything seemed so interesting... I felt almost the opposite with UCSB's descriptions, but I love the atmosphere there so much more.

I really want to do business but I don't want that same 'high school' feel from LMU and SCU.. should I just go ahead and deal with 4 years of econ and then MBA at a school like LMU or (hopefully) USC so that I can land the music industry job I've dreamed of?

Whatever your passion is, study it as an undergrad. Don’t worry about business school right now. It’s actually preferable to get some real-world experience between undergrad and business school. Find a program that you can see yourself doing for four years, excel in that, and then worry about an MBA.

Is LMU’s program so much different from SCU? What is it about LMU’s courses that appeals? Figure that out, and see if UCSB or SCU have the equivalent program. If not, then LMU is a great choice for you.

I always vote for the big name school so I say UCSB, fun and national recognition. The name would probably help more than the others when it comes to applying for a MBA program. LMU is in LA which is fun. I don’t know much about SCU.

… tend to complain about that their school puts a damper on fun. Add that it’s the area of Santa Clara - beautiful sylvan atmosphere, but boring, similar to Stanford.

I know that LMU is Jesuit and I’'m sure SCU is also. Nothing implied here, other than they are Catholic-Jesuit Unis.

UCSB, on the other hand, =150 in CQ, conviviality quotient. Those kids are geniuses wrt partying.

But since the OP applied to both LMU and SCU, maybe Catholic education is wanted at least in part.

LMU grads seem pretty happy with the school. I known three total and all have nothing but good things to say about it.

thanks for all the replies, so far I’m leaning to LMU because everyone from my school is going to SCU (like I said, my school feeds to SCU and LMU because well… its a jesuit high school and both LMU/SCU are jesuit). Both SCU and LMU have the courses I want to take, both are similar in their education level, so basically its a choice between going to school in santa clara vs LA, and obviously I’m going to pick LA. As for UCSB… I like it a lot and as much as I would love to go there I can not see myself having to do economics for 4 years… I would much rather do something more fun and engaging such as marketing or management at LMU’s undergrad business school.

Oh, yeah, undoubtedly, Mitty has to send 1/2 its class to SCU. That would be like hs. Best of luck… I agree w/ SMCguy, I think you’ll love LMU. Nice location on the bluffs.
