i got two loans : Unsubsidized and subsidized. I recieved $ 0.00 in AID, so im screwed. In my options it says first loan, the govt. loan will only give me 5k a year, max. And Another loan, which only parents can take out, that was $19 K. My parents cant handle 19 K with monthly payments right after i get the loan. The unsubsidized i can pay after college. BUt the other 19 k, iono. What can i do?

That’s actually my situation this year. No financial aid for me except for about $200 in “gift aid” for the entire year.

I would advise contacting your Financial Aid adviser as SOON AS POSSIBLE, who you can look up on GROWL under your awards/financial stuff.
Or, go to the Student Services Building and they can help point you in the right direction. Waiting will only worsen the situation because you may miss some important deadlines. And they definitely won’t hesitate to not give out money.

The loans on GROWL are only estimated, and there should be an option for you to change your loan amount. You confirm the amount by a later deadline.

Your tuition every quarter is automatically taken care of out of the loans (denoted by “<credit>”). Whatever is leftover from the quarter loans is sent to you by check or deposited in your bank account, if you signed up for Direct Deposit.</credit>

To illustrate (I live at home, so I don’t know if/how this would change with housing fees):

Total loans: $17K, divided into ~$6K per quarter.
Tuition is ~$2600 per quarter.
The rest of the quarter loan (~$3K), would be deposited into my bank account (which I use for food, gas, textbooks, school supplies, photocopying, printing, etc.; I advise not spending it otherwise because you are just going to be paying it back eventually).

On paying back loans: Neither I or my parents are paying back our actual loans; for now we are just paying off the monthly interests ($15 for me, $80 for parents) to only pay back the exact loan later. So that can be a temporary relief for you.

On another note: Your financial aid is contingent upon FULL-TIME enrollment (at least 12 units per quarter).

Since the loans on GROWL are only estimated, when will you find out how much aid you really get?

Why didn’t you guys sign up for scholarships? This one girl I know got nearly $50,000 in scholarships.

lol I got the chancellor’s scholarship
5000

too lazy to write essays.

I never wrote an essay for chancellor’s, I think I just got it because of high SAT scores or something…

Yea its either that or GPA. I think I would have got it if i applied at UCR back in November

I applied for scholarships. never got any 3.4 gpa with a ACT of 21 and SAT 1300 is not able to compete with 4.3 gpa 30 act and 2000 sat

think it was SAT… my GPA was low

my SAT was really high

there’s also the regents scholarship though
