Loans

I want to rent a apartment in sam Houston university area but I don’t have the funds what loan could help me with that ?

From your other threads it looks like you’re a low income student at a TX community college. You can file the FAFSA and take the ~$5500/year federal student loan, but you said Sam Houston Univ. Costs $20k/year. You don’t have the stats for merit aid, which is tough to get as a transfer, and a Pell Grant and the federal student loan won’t be enough to cover the cost of the university. Is there a 4-year school you can commute to from home? If Pell and the student loan would cover tuition you could work to cover commuting expenses. It sounds like you’re in your first semester at your cc, so you have time to explore options.

Don’t low income students get More money from aid ? How do other students be able to afford 20k tuition a year I know all sam Houston students aren’t rich …

No.
You typically get a Pell Grant of max **$6k per year. **
Then you get a loan of $5500 per year, until junior year, then you get $7500. You have to pay it back.
That’s about it, unless your grades are good and your school awards you merit dollars (based on grades only).

Most students can’t afford the schools they want to attend, so they find a local instate school to attend that will be cheap.
Some students have their parents help them with the costs of school.
Some students have a little savings from their part time jobs.

I was a very low income student many years ago, and my parents couldn’t afford to help me, so I worked two jobs and did sewing, cleaning dorm rooms, and running errands on the side for spending money. I rode a bike everywhere because I couldn’t afford a car.
What I am saying is that it is NOT EASY to be broke and go to school.

Low income students get more need based aid than students from higher income families, but it’s based on income not the cost of the school. That extra aid comes in the form of a Pell Grant, which you’re already receiving, and sometimes state grants. Not all states offer grants to low income students. You’re likely receiving all the need based aid you’re eligible for, and if that’s the case you have to look for options that are affordable on your budget.

If you’re getting a ~$6k/year Pell Grant and take the $7500/year federal student loan as a junior and senior, that gives you a budget of ~$13k/year. The University of Houston looks like it’s in commuting distance and the tuition is less than $10k/year. Have you thought about applying there?

Tuition + room and board and all other expenses but sorry sam Houston tuition is 5,000 a year I just added room and board and other expenses

I got accepted for the 6,095 Pell Grant and about 5,500 loans and I go to Houston community college

Fasfa said they do cost of attendance - EFC = your financial need my efc is 000000

Sam Houston University’s tuition is $5k/semester. It’s $10k/year. The total cost for dorming is about $25k/year.

The only thing the FAFSA is used for is to calculate Pell Grant eligibility. A $0 EFC means you qualify for a full Pell Grant. If your FAFSA EFC was $6,000, you’d get no Pell Grant. The FAFSA numbers have no relation to the aid colleges offer. It looks like your net cost at Sam Houston would be ~$12k/year ($25k - $6k Pell - $7500 federal student loan).

How far is the University of Houston? If you can commute there you can cover tuition with the Pell Grant and federal student loan and still have ~$3500 to put toward books and commuting costs.

I wanted to stay on campus now I thought I didn’t have enough credits to apply after fall …

U of h is like 20 minutes from me

I read that it depends on the college you put on your fasfa and that they won’t give you over what you need at that college … my tuition at my community college is 2212 a year and I paid 500$ for books

The Pell Grant is an entitlement. If you’re eligible for $6k/year, you’ll get that no matter how much the school costs, but you won’t get more. The amount of the federal student loan changes, but not by much and is usually eaten up by yearly tuition increases. The amounts students can borrow are $5500 as a freshman, $6500 as a sophomore, and $7500/year as a junior and senior. You aren’t going to get more than ~$13k/year from the feds, and half of that will be loans you have to pay back.

Sam Houston University doesn’t really offer transfer grants. They do have a $1,000/year grant to students with GPAs between 2.5-2.99, but they’re competitive so not everyone gets one. Even if you got one you’d still be $10k/year short. How would you pay it?

The University of Houston sounds like a good safety. The Pell Grant and student loan would cover tuition and leave you ~$1500/semester for books and transportation.

I have 8,000 left over in refunds my tuition at hcc is 1106 a semester + books is 550$ they gave me 6,095 Pell Grant and 5,500 in loans but u of h sounds like a better idea money wise

So that was like 11,595 in total

If you have $8,000 left, it sounds like most of it is the $5500 federal direct student loan. Be careful about borrowing more than you need. If you end up not using the $5500 loan for commuting expenses this year, you may want to consider not taking a loan at all next year.
