I posted this same question in the USAFA forum; i'm curious about USNA as well.
How common are LOA's from USNA? How difficult is it to get one? When do they typically go out?

Not too, very, ongoing. One's already been given for 2012. Don't spend any time worrying about one though. Applicants have no input on the determination so it's wasted energy.

Good luck and focus on those things you can have impact on.

MisterM....roughly 200 LOA's are given. This were numbers told us last year for the Class of 2010 - and they seem fairly accurate. For the Class of 2010 early LOA's for NON-recruited athlethes - and if I understand the reported 2012 LOA, it was for athletics - came in late September. Ours was dated Oct 3rd - and some came as late as January of that cycle.

Whistlepig is 100% correct - don't even think or expect an LOA - just present yourself in the best light you can.

good luck!

Agree with the above. Remember that the overwhelming majority of those offered appointments did NOT receive LOAs. Also, it's something over which you have zero control. Concentrate on turning in your best package as early as you can and applying for all noms for which you're qualified. That's your best bet for success.

Obviously I know I have no say in whether or not I get an LOA. But worrying about my application goes hand in hand with LOA. I've finished my application completely, just working on nominations now. I think many people would agree that waiting is the worst part of the application process. An LOA would certainly be nice to bridge the gap..

^^^^

Agreed -- although, in my day, there was no such thing as an LOA and we all endured the wait. :(

Many, many outstanding candidates who don't get LOAs do get appointments -- in fact, well over 80% of successful appointees don't have LOAs. What we're trying to say is that you shouldn't be disappointed or, worse, worried if you don't receive one. Failure to receive LOA is not an indicator of the likelihood of receiving an appointment; a strong package is.

I heard in a USNA packet or on the website that about 40% of the accepted get LOA's

no way jaybee9590.....that's not the case -

I concur with Peskemom. 40% is way high, perhaps, it is only 10% or even less.

My daughter recieved her LOA on Jan 18th this year. Wont forget that day anytime soon! The Day after she returned from a month backpacking alone through Europe, and the day before her 18th bday. :)

GOOD LUCK MISTERM!
