Sorry if this is a stupid question...but don't dorm rooms have locks? I keep reading in different threads about how random people walk into your room, how things get stolen, etc. or is locking the door just not common in dorms?

Also, what are all the kinds of dorms? Single, double, triple?

We locked the door when we'd left the room and at night, and my roommate and I had an unspoken agreement that if one of us was taking a nap in the room, the other one locked it if she were going anywhere, but other than that, our room was almost always unlocked.

as long as you or your rommie is in the room itself (unless sleeping), i wouldn't lock it. otherwise you should DEFINITELY lock your room because think CAN and WILL get stolen.

if you have a laptop, buy one of those laptop lock things. i forget what they are called. and hide your other electronics like mp3 player, dvds, cell phone, cd's, etc just in case someone gets in or your roomie forgets to lock up.

So are the doors usually wide open most of the time, or just closed but unlocked? Is it common for others on the floor to just walk in and start conversations?

from what i experienced during college weekends and staying in doorms, most of the time the doors were wide open if at least one of the roomates was inside just doing stuff like checking email or anything else that didn't involve changing close or sleeping or having to study fro something really important. i saw a whole bunch of people with their doors open as i walked around in the dorms and a lot of people would stop by or walk in to say hi or tell them info about classes, clubs, gossip...you know, whatever.

just remember, if neither of you are there or you are sleeping LOCK THE DOOR. other than those situations, do what you want. you also might wanna lock the door if you're changing.
