Logan airport in Boston to Brown

If not using a rental car, what is the best way to get to Providence. Which bus? Greyhound? How long would it take?

If you could direct me to previous posts that would be great!

also about cabs… do you need to call one in advance?!

If you don’t have too much stuff, I’d recommend the commuter rail ([MBTA > Schedules & Maps > Commuter Rail > Providence/Stoughton Line](<a href=“Providence/Stoughton Line | Commuter Rail | MBTA”>Providence/Stoughton Line | Commuter Rail | MBTA)). Trains run frequently from South Station (major station in Boston) to Providence station, and the fare is $7.75/person (with no surcharge for baggage). You’d have to take a cab or a short train ride from the Logan to South Station (only a couple of stops, but they’re on different lines). The commuter rail is fairly nice, and the trip takes only about an hour.

More questions:

Do I need to buy the Commuter Rail tickets in advance? Do I need to call for a cab in advance? If so, how?

Does the student advantage card purchased through Brown offer any discount on the Commuter Rail (Is the commuter rail the same as the silver line mentioned in other posts?)

My mom and I plan on carrying at last 2 big suitcases, 1 carry-on, a backpack, and a purse. Is this still do-able on a commuter rail?

Thank you so much!

May be tough on the commuter rail, hard to say. A cab probably would not have to be called in advance though you may have to wait at a desk for 15 minutes at the airport by baggage to get a driver willing to go that far or have them call you a driver willing to go that far. That’ll be a HUGE cab fare, however.

The Silver Line is the Boston T that takes you from Logan to South Station where you can pick up the MBTA Commuter Rail to Boston. You don’t need tickets in advance.

Amtrak runs along the same line and you will need tickets in advance and that is where Student Advantage does give you discounts. However, even with the student discount, the Amtrak train is more expensive than the commuter rail… about 2x more expensive.

For future purposes . . . flying into Providence airport - south of town - can be easier.

But for now and for Boston . . .

You do not need to buy tickets in advance - there are seats - although you can save a few bucks by buying the tickets at south station.

Here’s the link to Boston’s MTA train system going OUTBOUND on the Providence line from South Station to Providence

AMTRAK also has trains from BOS to PVD

4.The Silver Line public transit runs from Logan to South Station and it’s a lot cheaper than a cab.

PM me if you want more info; I’d also offer you phone support to you and/or your parents want to talk on the phone about all these travel things :-)

There used to be a direct bus service from Logan Airport to Providence. Don’t know if this still exists - with lots of suitcases, that might be your best bet. Look into it.

Taking a lot of luggage on the commuter rail and T is possible, but not very fun. You might end up having to take stairs at some point. I’ve done it by myself with a rolling suitcase + gym bag + backpack + purse (all filled to maximum capacity, haha) so you and your mom should be able to manage carrying your stuff.

Peter Pan Bus offers service directly from Boston Logan Airport to Kennedy Plaza in Providence (less than a mile away from campus, although it’s a hefty walk up a steep hill, so you might want to get a cab for the last leg of the trip). It’s $22 per person. You could find a cheaper deal by taking the Silver Line to South Station ($2.00) and the MBTA commuter rail to Providence (about $8.00, last I checked), but it’ll be a simpler ride on the Peter Pan Bus.

Someone told me SW Airlines flies direct to Providence, so there’s that option. This started up not too long ago. However, since we were visiting Boston/Cambridge anyway, we flew into Logan and then took the MBTA train to Providence (took under an hour.) From there, it was about a $7 cab ride to campus.

I think Peter Pan bus is the easiest-- they pick-up right at the airport and have at least two stops in Providence, including Kennedy Plaza. DD did this when she traveled alone to ADOCH. It was $22.

Findaplace, SWA has had service to TF Green Airport in Providence for at least 5 years (that’s when I first used it) and that is certainly the easiest way to get to/from Brown if you are flying. But SWA did just start flying into Boston’s Logan Airport a few weeks ago.

idk if you’re still wondering how this works, but i use this method ALL THE TIME to see my brother. if you want to know how it works, PM me. it’s rly not too hard. just no tht the subway is downstairs and the train is upstairs at south station. i made this mistake my first time n almost went all over boston… lol
