SFO to BOS, then commuter rail from South Station to Providence.

If you have too much luggage and don’t want to take the train, you can fly straight into PVD by transiting. Newark seems to be the closest if you want to do this.

My son flies direct from Chicago Midway (our smaller airport) to Providence. There are also SFO to Chicago Midway flights via Southwest, so you could fly that route rather than flying to Boston.

I’m from the Bay Area. The easiest and cheapest thing for me is always SFO → BOS, then taking MBTA into Providence. If the weather is really bad, a taxi to get up the hill is about $5.

For arriving the first time, I would fly into Providence, since you’ll probably have too much luggage to take MBTA. United usually directs me through Dulles or Newark for those.

If you are going for ADOC, get what ever seems easiest/cheapest etc. For frosh move in, unless you have airline “status” with free baggage, factor in the 2 free bags on SW for student and parents. Rental cars for parents from TFGreen usually reasonable, and help for getting the “other stuff” you don’t want to shlepp across country. (If parents come out for frosh move in. If not, chances are good some other parents will put out the come with us shopping trip invite if you ask around. I know I was always very willing to help my student’s friends.)

Can anyone tell me how often it is that Brown reimburses (if at all) pre-frosh students for their travels? I see other schools doing this elsewhere, but I see no mention of this at Brown…?

This could also relate with Brown’s notorious stinginess with financial aid…

Brown will not reimburse you for travel after the fact; if you qualify, they will send you a letter and/or an email about getting a free airline ticket from them via their travel agency.

We found Brown’s financial aid to be quite generous. It may, however, depend on where your family sits on the income continuum; I think Brown’s aid is heavily targeted to families with income below $100k.
