I had my orientation last week and the university security officer was one of the speakers.
He mentioned the usual things about keeping your laptop safe (keep it with you, lock dorm doors, laptop lock cables) but he also said that his security force also have recovered laptops that had Lojack on them. So I am wondering if it is worth purchasing. It's not a lot of money ($79.99 for 3 years or $89.99 for 4 years). It also mentions something about you getting back $1000 if they can not recover the laptop. (You need to read the fine print on the $1000...I did not read it).

So what does everyone think. Is Lojack worth purchasing ?

I did. It’s cheaper to pay the 80 bucks for the 4 years than to have to buy a new one once it gets stolen. It pays itself at least 5 or 6 times over if it does end up getting stolen

Is that where they pretty much glue a metal square thing onto your laptop? It’s subjective whether you’ll need it or not. At our school, thefts of laptops are extremely rare occurrences, so you could get by here without it.

Your laptop is your baby. You take it everywhere. Hell I take my to the bathroom, thats how much I care about it. Its one of those big investments, protect it.

I thought about that too, but really if someone wants to steal your laptop, he will whether you have all the “security” feature or not.

I carry mine to class(even though rarely use it) and when I go to study somewhere. In the beginning I was afraid about leaving it in my room even though both room mate and I lock the doors, you never now…I’d say do what your room mate and others do, if they have a lock then you buy one just for safety.

I used to get the daily police reports from UT-Austin. Thieves are clever! They would swipe backpacks/laptops from places such as gym bleachers. Kids would put stuff down, figuring it was safe because they were in the room playing basketball. You have to be vigilant!
