Would anyone here recommend that I mark everything I have with an engraver to reclaim it if it's stolen or do you think writing serial numbers down is enough? They could rip the serial number sticker off, I guess. I don't want to mar up all my electronics since it will be harder to sell them later if needed. I already have a trunk with alarm for all this stuff to go into.

For a laptop, you should invest in lo jack software.

Theft isn't a big problem if you do a couple of common sense things-

If you go to the bathroom in the library or something have someone watch your laptop.

Close your door when you leave the room.

I bought a lock for my laptop. Hope that's enough.

Put your drivers license number on things maybe?

I have a combo lock for my laptop. Do the tables in the library have cable holes or are at least somewhat heavy to just put the cable around a leg? So if I walk down an aisle to grab a book, in the time I get back, they can't get the cable under and around the leg to steal it. Do you think other students would give a crap if they saw someone trying to get the cable from around the table or breaking off the plastic that holds the lock in place? Or do I have to be so protective as to carry it at all times and not let it out of my sights at all?

Seriously, for your laptop, but lo jack software, it's only 80 dollars for 3 years. If your laptop is stolen the company tracks your computer and arrests the person who stole it.

for macbook variations, Undercover is a better alternative to Lojack.

Ok, jhum111, I'm pretty much sold on the idea of LoJack. I hope my laptop has the built-in computrace bios. Apparently if they format the hard drive, LoJack still resides on it. If the swap out hard drives, certain bios's will still contain it. What happens if I don't have a connection when it calls out? Will it keep trying? And does it affect performance? It sounds like once I install it, its ON there for good in some form or another. It's kinda cool that LoJack can wipe my hard drive with my authorization. I wonder what would happen if someone were to install Lojack and register it on a stolen laptop and then return the laptop without the owner knowing it was gone...then call it in stolen.

it sounds like you found a career....lol

The website for Undercover is such an Apple ripoff. But it seems cool.

Lo jack arrests people for you though? That's cool..

The Apple undercover sounds awesome if you have an apple...lo jack works in tandem with the police and can press charges if you'd like.

I'm loving the LoJack idea.

"Do you think other students would give a crap if they saw someone trying to get the cable from around the table or breaking off the plastic that holds the lock in place?"

Heh, I've asked random people sitting next to me whom I didn't know to watch my stuff plently of times.

Do the tables in dorm rooms have a hole to loop the laptop lock through?
