Has anybody bought this software/service? Have any students who have bought it had their computers stolen and did this software service work? Thanks.

I have installed a similar product on my son's laptop. http://www.pcphonehome.com/

What is does is that every time the computer accesses the internet, an email is sent to an address you set up. This email contains the ip address of the computer. The theory is that it will be easier to find the computer if the authorities know the location it is accessing the internet from. It's not a fool proof guarantee.

I got my program from www.collegestudentinsurance.com as part of their overall plan.
I have id stickers and an 'invisible ink pen' (uses a blacklight) to aid in identification and recovery. None of this is foolproof.

the price of the insurance policy was less than a 3 year license to www.lojackforlaptops.com and it covers all his stuff with a $25 deductible.

I don't work for this company! But I've posted about it earlier and they are reputable (and recommended by my son's college, fwiw)

I looked into this after you posted before, Sue. This looks like an excellent product and I was looking into both lojac and the pcphonehome but neither are good for overseas and I was looking for it for my daughter in China. If anyone has a student overseas or knows of a product that's good for out of the usa, also something that's good for non-students as well?

Q: Will CSI's policy cover property if my child resides off-campus?
A: Yes. We cover property anywhere in the world.

and on the pcphonehome site.
