Long shot for an OOS female?

Hey all!
A lot of people from HS, who out rank me applied. But I figured I would give W&M a shot anyway, plus admissions really can't complain when I slip $60 its way.

I'm getting ready to start volunteering with another organization, just for kicks. Its not on my app though :/

I was able to scrounge up two extra alumni recommendations.
My first essay was an extended metaphor about my job (fairly light-hearted) and the supplement was a recycled poem about my aunt's Bipolar disorder (very metaphorical, fairly morbid). The latter had a short explanation. (if anyone has time to read over the second one... I'm thinking I might recycle it for other apps, so please PM me)

Sorry this was kind of long. Thanks in advance!

In state you would have a great shot. OOS I'd say you have a decent shot.

you have a shot, it was definitely worth sending the application

thanks for the feedback Heretohelp and soccerguy! Also, I know it is a little late, but do you know of anything else I can do at this point to get myself noticed aka "up the odds" of my admission?

Not that I know of, maybe send in your 9 weeks grades or any updates to your resume.
If you end up getting waitlisted, I know firsthand that sending them a sincere letter of interest definitely helps your chances!

Thank you! Sending a letter of interest upon being waitlisted is a great idea.

anyone else?

you have acceptable stats but w&m seems to like to see creativity and passion in some field and not just a smorgasbord of awesomeness, so assuming you demonstrated your love for one of your activities, i'd say you have a decent shot.

basically, your stats are good but your ECs are where you shine, and w&m is definitely the type of school that will look at ECs and passion. so, good luck! i definitely think you have a chance.

Thanks for the input prez!

So... I have a 50/50 shot or more of a 30/70?

BUT I think the OOS matter hurts your chances. You have great grades and test scores, but your rank makes me wonder. With such a high GPA, I am surprised you are not in the top 10%. I love your ECs. Did you visit and have an interview?

Again, not you personally, just the out of state factor.

Where else are you applying?

The rank aspect has been a constant source of worry. My school used to do levels of academics (in the last year it changed) by Academic, Honors, and Gifted & Talented. My first year I took two honors classes and Latin III was only offered in Academic. This negatively impacted my class rank. Also, I don't know if this plays ay roles, but most of the top 10% are going to fairly competitive universities (Duke, Columbia, Dartmouth, WashU, UPenn, etc).

I haven't had an interview or a signed=in visit. My family ventures to Williamsburg every 2 years or so, so I figured I was already well acquainted with the campus. Unfortunately, this will make it seem as though I do not have much interest in the school.

Other pending schools:
Brandeis University, Boston College, Washington and Lee, U of Richmond, Tulane, U Vermont, Bucknell, Wake Forest, Syracuse, SUNY Geneseo, U Rochester, St. Mary's of Maryland, UMD College Park, (Clemson)

I believe your school sends along a report that will explain the grading and such and put your rank in context.

Your list of schools is great! Many good choices!

What was your supplement? Something from your anchoring the sports stuff?

I think you look very strong on paper and the OOS thing is just not something you can change or control right now.

My supplement was actually a little out there... it was a poem+explanation about my Aunt's bipolar disorder. Admissions could either love it, hate it or be bored with it (33.3% isn't so good).

I was thinking about sending in a taping of the show to W&M, but I should have probably done that for my supplement. Oh well.

Oh, and I know this isn't the right forum for this but what do you think my chances are at the other schools to which I have applied?

You have some great college choices! And I think that you will be okay, like 60/40 Yes.

Thanks for the optimism mcvcm92
