<p>What is the purpose of the long winter weekend (four days)? It is hassle for two days transportation after the three weeks New Year break.</p>

<p>Most schools build in a break every 4-5 weeks. A little R&R and time to see family, assuming you live within a reasonable commute. Given the kids are mainly 14-17 years old, I think the breaks are beneficial.</p>
<p>Son will take train this time. He needs to walk 20 mins to train station. We need a good weather that day !</p>

<p>Some schools will have just finished exams. These kids will accept any free time they can get and deservedly so.</p>
<p>Most schools dorms remain open for boarders who are not traveling home because of distance.</p>
<p>^^^ Not all schools stay open. S is at Loomis and they're pretty clear that ALL students must leave for the long winter weekend.</p>
<p>Its not about the parents. The kids really really need the break.</p>
