Look up in the sky! It's a bird, it's a plane....

Oh sorry, it's just a chance thread :(

Info:

Race: Asian but wondering if I should just put Other or Prefer Not to Answer since I have a Spanish last name
Gender: Last time I checked, male
State: NJ resident
Rising senior in a somewhat competitive school with some going on to Ivies and other top schools
Financial Aid: Applying

High School Record:

(sorry if it appears somewhat lengthy since there's a different situation every single year)

Freshman Year: Acc. English, Acc. World History, Honors Geometry, Honors Phys Sci, Honors Spanish, Photo 1

GPA was a 3.33 because of my abysmal math grade and subpar B's in english and history. It is completely my fault since I didn't work to my full potential (procrastinating, missing homework). My mom didn't fall in a coma, I wasn't battling depression - there is no justification.

Sophomore Year: Acc. English, Acc. US History, Acc. Algebra 2, Acc. Biology, Honors Spanish, Photo 2

GPA was a 3.91 since most of my classes weren't honors level. I was able to move up in almost all of my classes given my grades.

Junior Year: Honors English, AP US History, Acc. Trigonometry, Honors Chemistry, Honors Spanish, AP Lang/Comp

GPA was a 3.64 because of a rogue B in Lang/Comp.

Senior Year: AP English Literature, AP Gov, Acc. Calc, Honors Physics, AP Spanish Literature, and either Choir or Business Org (since I got screwed out of my elective choices)

Only time will tell...

Overall GPA: 3.63/4.6

Without freshman year: 3.78

(Highest weighted possible is a 5.7)

Standardized Testing:

Jan 2008: 1300/1940 (600 CR/700 Math/640 Writing)
May 2008: 1280/1850 (640 CR/640 Math/570 Writing)

Honestly, I thought I got high scores for the May SAT since I found little difficulty with the questions. I'm still scratching my head over that one score. I'm planning to retake the SATs in either Oct or Nov, as well as sign up for some SAT 2's

As for AP scores, I'm expecting either a 4 or 5 on the AP US exam and I'm taking the rest on my list at the end of my senior year.

Extracurriculars:

4 years of cross country
4 years of winter track
4 years of spring track
Involved in Spanish Honors Society
Involved in Latin Club
Campaigned for a NJ Rep to Congress (Mike Ferguson, if it matters)

Yeah, it's a less than stellar list considering the other posters on these forums but I'm planning on volunteering this summer.

Colleges of Interest:

I'm leaning towards a business based degree, but I'm still not sure what I want to be (might make a drastic change to premed, engineering, and so on).

Hoping to stand a chance at the following:

NYU Stern
University of Virginia
Rutgers (Business and SAS)
Penn State UPark
Georgetown
Cornell
UMich - Ann Arbor
UNC - Chapel Hill
UChicago

and for kicks - HYPS, hahaha. (completely optional, don't feel obligated to)

Any input would be great! Thanks in advance. :)

Modest bump?

Another bump? :(

Well, the first thing I'd recommend is to add at least one other safety on there, because just about every school on your current list would considered relatively reach-ish. I suppose Rutgers is a match, and Penn State is kinda safety-ish, but I'd add another that you really like just to be sure. As it stands right now, your super-score is 1980, and that along with a 3.6 instantly makes Georgetown, Cornell and U of Chicago very high reaches, at least that's what I think. UMich, UNC, and UVA are better reaches, and you stand a more reasonable shot there. Good Luck!

where did you get in at?

NYU Stern-Reach
University of Virginia-High Match
Rutgers (Business and SAS)-Safety
Penn State UPark-Safety
Georgetown-Reach
Cornell-Reach
UMich - Ann Arbor-Match
UNC - Chapel Hill-Match
UChicago-Reach

I’d say Georgetown-High match
UNC Chapel HIll- match
Cornell- reach but pretty decent chance
As far as HYPS… I dont see the harm in trying. You are well-qualified enough and seem to be a pretty good runner. And you have a sense of humor, so that should count for something :P

Thanks for chancing me, i applied to cornell too! April 1st can not get here fast enough…Aprils fools!! you got into college lol

Yeah do not I repeat do not on your application state you want to major in a math or engineering-related major. That will lower your chances by what you’ve given on why your gpa is so low and class grades. I also recommend applying to schools in your state just for kicks and giggles (:

GO PSU!!

Yea, you stand a good chance at Penn State.

And YES, we need more Republicans here!!!
