Looking for a college List in Computer Science

I am looking for build a college list in computer science

I am open to moving to different states if I can get into a good school but I would also like too look at colleges close to my State California

My Stats

GPA -Unweighted 2.97
Weighted UC GPA - 3.4

SAT -2150 and ACT composite score-35

SAT subject

Math level 2 800
Chemis-730
physics 800

AP Scholar with Distinction

I have 7 Aps right now

Physics - 3 APS all 5 score
chemistry 5
computer science 5
English Lit - 4

I am not that worried about cost as much as I am about reputation of school and future prospects.I doubt I will stand a chance to get into any good UCs due to my low gpa. I also would like to go to a good science /math school if possible. I will anyway to applying to UC.s and CSUs so looking for additional reputed schools that don't come under those two where I will stand a fair chance of admission.

I do have some extra curricular stuff on computer based programming but nothing much on volunteering etc.

I messed up my Junior year and had to do repeat 3 courses (English and History) in summer school to repair my grades. Combined with my already low GPA I am not sure what schools will be interested in me. Can anyone help me build a list ?

Based on your stats, SJSU is probably a high match if you apply to CS, low match if you apply for software engineering or (more hardware oriented) computer engineering.

SJSU’s 2012 and 2013 admission thresholds are listed here, although they may change from year to year:
[Info.sjsu.edu

For SJSU and other CSU frosh admissions, the eligibility indices are calculated as described here:
CSUMentor - Plan for College - High School Students - Eligibility Index](http://info.sjsu.edu/static/admission/impaction.html)

Most schools consider high school grades and/or rank to be at least as important or more important than test scores.

Have your parents told you what the price limit is?

No, they haven’t given a price limit. I will be applying for loans but they will support me wherever I chose to go even privates.

Ideally I would like to chose a good research university, I think I might get at CSU but they are not research oriented.

Better find out how much they will actually contribute so that you don’t get an unpleasant surprise in April.

No, they haven’t given a price limit. I will be applying for loans but they will support me wherever I chose to go even privates.

You need to talk to your parents. YOU can’t borrow your way thru college. YOU can only borrow the following amounts:

frosh 5500
soph 6500
jr 7500
sr 7500

Obviously, a $5500 loan isn’t going to make a dent in a $55k+ school.

Ask your parents how much THEY’LL pay each year.

What I meant is my parents will support loan for tuition and are willing to take a parent plus loan for me.Both of them are employed.

Parent loans are not a good idea, nor are student loans which require cosigners (i.e. more than the direct/Stafford loan amount).

Find out what their non-loan contribution is. A realistic additional maximum student contribution (student loan plus your work earnings) is probably no more than $10,000 per year.

One more option: commute to a local community college, do better there than you did in high school, then transfer to a UC. If you do better at community college than in high school, you will have more choices of UCs than you are likely to have now. It may also cost less than doing all four years at a UC.

Issue with community college is again going to be my GPA. Its not that I am a big slacker, its just that I don’t really love doing busy work. I went through an emotional roller coaster in my junior year missing school and was assessed as having some difficulties in executive functioning. The school did some assessment and this year I am in IEP. I am not receiving any other accommodation though I have an IEP . Not sure if the IEP and one special ed class that I am taking this year is going to hurt my chances at admissions. Also my writing ability sucks! Writing is the most difficult part for me especially the essays. I am really research oriented and have good problem solving abilities and believes I can do well in research.

College (community college or university) tends to have less busy work than high school. However, it will likely have more of the more difficult non-busy work.

If your writing ability is poor, college English composition courses will be a hurdle. So will writing research papers in any subject.

Again, figure out from your parents what their actual contribution will be.

At nearly every college, you’re going to have to pass two Frosh Comp classes…or get the needed score on an AP English exam. Could you self study and get a good score on AP Englsh Comp?

I get the feeling that English Comp classes are going to be a downfall for you. I think that you’ll perceive the writing assignments as tedious and boring.

However, if you could get thru the English Comp exam, you can skip Frosh Comp at some schools. My younger son did that. HE self studied for AP English Comp and skipped both Frosh Comp classes (which he knew he’d hate).

I cleared the AP English Composition with a 4 in my junior year and I am planning to do my AP English Literature this year. Last year since I took 6 AP’s it was hectic, this year I hope to have more time to do my AP’s.

What AP classes/exams have you completed and scores?

cleared the AP English Composition with a 4 in my junior year

I would look for schools that will give you full Frosh Comp credit (for 2 classes) for a 4 in AP English.

I don’t know you, but my guess is that you’d rather shoot yourself than write a bunch of essays over two semesters. lol :)

I have

Physics - 5 score ( wrote all 3 physics papers)
chemistry 5
computer science 5
Calculus BC- 5
English Lit - 4

You are right about the essays, that is the most difficult part.

Physics - 5 score ( wrote all 3 physics papers)
chemistry 5
computer science 5
Calculus BC- 5
English Lit - 4

Alabama would give you credit for:

8 credits for Gen Chem I and Gen Chem II
8 credits for Calculus I and II
6 credits for Frosh Comp I and II

which CS exam did you take?

Which AP Physics exams do you have 5’s for?

Physics B …PH 101 and PH 102 …8 N
Physics C – Mechanics… PH 105… 4 N
Physics C – Electricity/Magnetism … PH 106… 4 N

http://courseleaf.ua.edu/introduction/academicpolicies/creditbyexamination/#advancedplacementaptext</a></p>

Currently college board offers only CS A , and that is the one I took, I wish they had CS B , but apparently there are not enough takers for it.

Physics B - 5
Physics C – Mechanics - 5
Physics C – Electricity/Magnetism - 5

I did get a 5 on all three of the Physics AP’s I did Physics Honors last years but used to read a lot of Physics in spare time so took all the Physics AP’s. But I am still doing Physics AP this year at School. My Physics teacher it would be still worthwhile to do it in detail. My School allows only one science a year and there were nothing else interesting enough for me.

^^^

Wow…you get a lot of physics credits but I think as a CS major, the Physics w/ Calc I and II are the needed ones. So, you’d get 8 credits for those.
